The protagonist of this book is named Susan McConnell. Susan is a sixteen year old junior at Del Norte High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is a loner and mostly stays at home to study. She is a hardworking student and is very unpopular. Personally, I like Susan. Throughout the book she was the only one who wanted to do the right thing when the other characters in the book accidently killed Mr. Griffin. The one thing that I didn’t like about Susan was how…

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes that beholder is one’s own self. Sometimes when one look in the mirror, they aspire to more than what they are—prettier, skinnier, or thicker. The media plays a big part in that, for it glorifies beautiful, Coca-Cola bottle figured women. The conflict and plot in Jane Martin’s short play Beauty displays how one could be blind to their own value because of jealousy.…

In general, authors follow a pattern when writing. Some may use foreshadowing or irony in all of their work, while others may have characters that are alike. Sarah Orne Jewett is no exception to this generalization. Her poems, stories, novellas, and books commonly contain similar traits. Sarah Orne Jewett, an author best known for her local color works, often wrote in first-person, used allusions and historical references, and set her stories in the New England area.…

In Ann Patchett’s State of Wonder, women of the Lakashi tribe have had the capability to conceive children until they die. Medical science should not attempt to make this possible for all women. Modern science needs to stop trying to improve human reproduction and let nature take its course. Just because giving birth at an elderly age can be done doesn’t mean that it should be done. Menopause should be the ending of women’s reproductive years.…

In just a matter of months, Sarah has hastily experienced and heard things that she hadn’t thought she would. As she moved into her cousin’s home, she begins to see how the people outside her home assumed many things. Sarah learned about harlots, Quakers, and most importantly witches. At the young age of 9, you would think that a girl would be afraid of such precarious knowledge. But Sarah was different. She embraced it, but masked her enthusiasm to show her cousin that she was mature enough to know these things. “I did not want my cousin to think of me as an infant who did not know how the world moved (pg. 46 Kent).” Sarah accepted these mature thoughts and began to broaden her mind even more. “Through the many years since that time, I have learned that women show their true selves in a different way. Sharing secrets is the way in which women tie themselves together, for it reveals complicity and trust (pg.46 & 47 Kent).” Being with Margaret developed her perceptions about her external world. She is fed with new information and as a hungry child, she eagerly accepts. Sarah and Margaret begin to develop a close bond as well as the whole Toothacker family. In the beginning, it puzzles Sarah to why her direct family loathed the Toothackers. It took time for Sarah to understand why her parents hated them. Sarah, only being a child, loved the Toothakers for their kindness and accepting behavior, but…

The next section of the book gives some background information on Lou Ann’s parents. Her mother, Doris Jean, became deaf a little after she turned one. She had spinal meningitis, and it left her deaf. Doris Jean was taken to the Indiana State School for the Deaf when she was six years old. The worst part of this experience was that she thought she was being punished for something; she did not understand why her family didn’t want her anymore. Life at the school was a positive experience. She was finally able to communicate and make friends. The school did not want the students to sign, they were supposed to lip read and speak; however it seems like most of students signed anyways. After graduation Doris Jean moved into an apartment in Indianapolis and found a job.…

    1. After seven years of ever-lurking silence Ann does something she soon regrets. At the end of the story Ann says, “If you knew him though- John would try” (p. 7). So did Ann really know John? I think Ann did know John and she knew that he would come home like he always did. But I think she let herself believe what Steven continued to say which was no one would risk coming home in such a bad storm. Ann always had feelings for Steven, but they were all for the wrong reasons. So I think her act with Steven was her defiance of seven years of ‘ever-lurking silence’ with John. Ann always felt alone with John and I think she thought Steven could give her more than what John had given her, but soon after her act with Steven she realized she was wrong. Ann realized John was a man and there was nothing Steven could give her that John wouldn’t, but by the time Ann realized this it was too late.…

However, in the novel utilized language is good. It is not so difficult to understand. The characters are well-drawn. John is the first one. I realize that he thinks about himself, he is self-interested. I do not like him because I dislike such feeling. He is disinterested in the world. However, Susan Colgate is not like him she my favorite character in the novel. About her in the chapters of the book I read with a great pleasure. I think she is more real character because she has more connection to the world. Definitely,…

Lucy is a very careless girl, but this applies only to the loneliness of her childhood and possibly adding a solemn tone to the emotions of Lucy during her youth. A young girl with a hard childhood has been impeded by her family members to overcome a lack of confidence and shyness, due to Lucy’s parents’ actions that could have been influenced through the rate of their alcohol usage. Lucy, careless as young human beings are, pulled a seven-hundred-pound cement urn off its pedestal and onto her legs, crushing both oh her femurs, stating that she believed that there were fish inside of the urn and that she wanted to see them. These careless mistakes resulted in an enjoyable “Best time of her childhood” period of time inside of the hospital. These six weeks were “the best of her childhood” because she gained friends, received presents, and was able to break out of her shell at the hospital without anyone judging her. She was able to be comfortable at this new “home-like” place, and did not feel a hatred…
