Animal Food Labeling Research Paper
The most common animal food products labeling debates are about dairy cows and chickens. This is where the saying “you are what you eat” applies. When a cow is treated with recombinant bovine somatotrophin, or rbST, the milk from that cow will also contain rbST. This growth hormone helps improve milk production and is proven to be safe for consumption by multiple health organizations (“RbST”). Many labeling laws have been made to inform the general public of this growth hormones. The chemical injected into cow may not be harmful, but the growth promoter injected into chicken is not the same case. Chicken that could contain traces of arsenic should be required to have a warning label on its package. Chickens are fed arsenic to prevent diseases, …show more content…
These eggs are from “free-range chickens”. This is can be a common labeling misconception as the chickens are housed 90% of the time. “The door may be open for only five minutes and the farm still qualifies as “free-range” (“‘Free Range’ Birds Raised for Meat”).” This should not come as a surprise because if they were “free-range” a worker would have to go out and pick up all the eggs laid in the field. Even when the chickens are let out, they are usually walking around in mounds of dirt, feces, and rocks. “Cage-free” chickens is not any better because it is basically chickens with no cages. The chickens can barely move there are so many chickens crammed into the small space. These label misled consumers to think they are eating a healthier product Organic food is defined by what it does not contain. According to the owner of the local, organic store Clean Plate “ Organic food [will not have] chemical sprays or chemical fertilizers….genetically modified seed…[and] will have less pesticides (Isaacson)”. Organic foods have different kinds of labels and meanings that can alter how organic a product really is. For example, a food product may be 100% organic or organic. The product could have been processed organically, but not produced organically. A product that is organic might contain only a few organic

    Ten years ago it was difficult to find organic foods in local stores, but now most super markets sell several types of foods that are organic. Because of this, the public has been given the opportunity to provide healthier and cleaner foods for their families. But, when buying groceries, people unfortunately tend to buy what they believe to be organic food, but what is actually referred to as conventional organic, without even noticing. There are two different types of organic foods, true organics and conventional organics.
