Animal Farm Chapter 1-4 Summary
Animal Farm by George Orwell, starts out with Mr. Jones being drunk and going to bed after not securing the farm buildings correctly. As soon as his lights go out, all the other animals congregate in the barn to listen to Old Major talk. Old Major is convinced he’s going to die soon and wants to tell all the other animals a great piece of wisdom. He talks about how all the animals are just raised to work long lives and when they’re no longer of use to “man”, they are slaughtered. He thinks there is no reason for the animals to give in to the humans especially when the men are taking things from the animals and not giving anything of value in return. Old Major also talks about a dream he had the night before where animals could live free without humans by overthrowing them. And he said that it was possible to overthrow the humans as long as the animals created the perfect bond and could be powerful. He teaches the animals a song called “The Beasts of England” about a utopian animal community. Three days later, Old Major dies in his sleep. The other animals start planning Old Major’s plan and they formulate the ideas of a philosophy called Animalism. Mollie is worried that she won’t be able to wear ribbons and have sugar in the utopian society, and Snowball tells her that ribbons are a form slavery and they will be abolished. Moses, a raven, tells all the animals that there is a place called Sugarcandy Mountain. The pigs try to convince everyone that it doesn’t exist, but they are still intrigued by the idea. The rebellion starts quickly and Mr. Jones is driven to drink after losing money in a lawsuit. His men become lazy and dishonest. Mr. Jones forgets to feed the animals and the cows break into the shed to eat. Mr. Jones and his men find out and whip the cows. In their anger, the animals attack the men and the men flee from the farm. Happy with their success, the animals get rid of any evidence of the humans being there. They
