Themes
Family: The short story shows that saving family from punishment comes before moral principles e.g. when the Headman covers the truth of his brother (Marimuthu) committing murder of his wife.
Power: In the village the Headman has more power and Ragunathan appears as a "timid mouse" infront of him. However, he is described as a "bully" infront of his family.
Rich/ Poor: Anil and many other villagers are seen to be poor however, the Headman is rich enough to keep Anil silent by sending him away.
Men/ women: Men appear to be violent bullies in this short story for instant Ragunathan gives Amma a "walloping" showing women as victims of abuse.
Justice: In the story there is never sign of justice for instance Marimuthu got away with murdering his wife. Ragunathan also beats his wife and Anil is sent away from the village as he was aware of the truth. …show more content…

    The short story Anil was written by Ridjal Noor and the story is set in a small village is Malaysia. Noor begins the story by describing the setting which make the reader feel slightly uneasy yet intrigued as to what might be occurring on the 'hot sweltering night in the middle of march'. Quite disturbing imagery is used and it becomes clear at the beginning that poverty is a big theme throughout of the story. 'When mosquitoes were in their reign of terrorism there was a little village where the villagers kept to themselves in little huts...dreaming their dreams that rarely amounted to anything' Within this quote there are two contrasting imageries because the personification 'mosquitoes in their reign of terrorism' could be foreshadowing something bad that is yet to come, this is because the word reign is used normally used to describe a particular person that is in charge of a group of people (such as the village) and mosquitoes are linked with blood, diseases and even deaths, this could suggest that the mosquitoes could symbolise the headman and suggests that any blood or deaths that occur are because of his doing and therefore foreshadows the terror which will soon happen.…

    Is Justice Served in Punishment?

    Is justice served in punishment? There are many factors that should be considered as to whether or not justice is being served by the punishment given. The short story “Punishment” written by Rabindranath Tagore is about two brothers and their wives. The story begins when the two brothers return home from work and hear that their wives have been screaming and yelling at each other again. The elder brother Dukhiram demands that his wife Radha get his food. Radha responds to her husband by telling him there is no food in the house and asks him if she should go out and earn it. Dukhiram is angered by his wife’s reply, grabs a farm knife and lunges at her hitting her in the head with it. Radha dies a within minutes of being struck by the knife. Within a short time after the incident the landlord Ramlochan shows up at the house to collect the rent the family is behind on and sees Radha lying on the floor dead. Chidham (Dukhiram younger brother) immediately began stating that his wife killed Radha. Chidham, in order to save the life of his brother placed the blame on his wife and began begging Ramlochan to help him. Chidham and his wife Chandara both passionately loved each other. Chandara could not believe what her husband had just done. In the end Chandara choses to be found guilty and is punished by death for a crime she did not commit. Chandara was unwilling to participate in the lies that her husband was asking of her and the lies of the corrupt and unjust system that surrounded her. Even after Chidham offers Chandara an alibi she refuses by keeping her silence. In the story “Punishment” it is made very clear that women are not equal to men when it comes to freedom and nature. The question of “is justice served by the punishment given” is dependent on the situation at hand, the crime committed and the feelings of those who feel they are victims.…
