ANDROMEDA
I am Andromeda, princess to Joppa and daughter of Queen Cassiopeia and King Cepheus. Born and raised in Joppa, I know the way everything works around here and I was prepared to take over the throne with my beloved Calibos. That was until the day Calibos decided to kill Zeus’ herd of flying horses, leaving only one named Pegasus. In retaliation to this heinous and odious crime, Zeus turned my fiancé into a vile monster, and of course I can no longer marry him. The people of Joppa must have a prestigious King to look up, not a repulsive creature.
The same man who once loved me turned evil and placed a curse on me, taking revenge on a choice I had to make. Now, any suitor who wishes to marry me must pass an impossible riddle, and all who fail must be burned at the stake. I was prepared to give up on finding love, that is until one fateful day. Upon my return from the swamp in which Calibos resides, a man by the name of Perseus presented himself as my suitor.

I had faith he could answer my riddle. So I began to present it to him. He took a minute before he answered and as I had expected he answered it and presented the hand of Calibos to me. Perseus told me he would break my curse from Calibos and free me.
Our wedding took place almost immediately. Queen Cassiopeia read our vows to us and made one fatal mistake. In the temple of Thetis she compared my own beauty to that of Thetis, angering the goddess. Thetis placed yet another curse on me; in 30 days I must be sacrificed to the Kraken, or the Kraken will destroy all of Joppa. I showed no fear, but I knew that my life as I knew it would be gone in 30

On the eleventh day, they reached Gilmanus, greeted by Sacha and all of Gilmanus for their homecoming. Once they had docked, the entire island partook in a magnificent feast for the fortunate return of Domos and his men and prepared for the arrival of the gods by sacrificing animals in their name. At the end of the feast, the gods descended from Mount Olympus to bestow Domos with immortality. Zeus spoke, “Domos, slayer of the monstrous Kharybdis, your heroic deeds have earned you unlimited kleos and a place amongst the immortal beings.” Domos thanked Zeus and the gods and expressed in words his request, “Mighty Zeus, I have lived a hero’s life, and now know that it is a terrible burden that I cannot bear for I still live whilst my loyal men are left unburied upon the sea’s floor. Although grateful that you, Lord of men, have bestowed the greatest honor upon me, I only wish to spend my never-ending days beside my home’s hearth, relishing in domesticity, like that of Hestia. I leave the leadership I have acquired, the archery skills, and my newfound kleos behind even though that may mark me a man. However, I am a man because I choose peace over war and sorrow, and shall leave the city to be led by my mother, Sacha, slayer of Scylla, who is far stronger than I. And I, Domos, slayer of Kharybdis, have fulfilled one fate of mine and now wish to be Domos of the hearth.” Zeus responded, “Then so shall it be, from this day forth, the man once known as Domos, slayer of Kharybdis, be known as Domos of the…

The first book I decided to read this summer was The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. This book was first published in 1946. However, it is set in the distant future, as many of his novels are. Bradbury begins his novel in January of 2030 in Ohio where a rocket is launched into space heading for Mars. In the following month on Mars, a Martian named Ylla begins having strange dreams about a rocket from Earth landing on her planet and a strange creature named Nathaniel York emerging from it. Ylla’s dreams come true, and the men from Earth finally land on Mars, but her husband shoots them all. The next expedition from Earth lands in August 2030, this time carrying three men who are led by Captain Williams. They explore the civilization and…

When something is forbidden it can make it even more “attractive” and that is what happens with Pyramus and Thisbe’s love. Pyramus, “the handsomest youth” and Thisbe, “the fairest maiden” are the two lovers in the story; they want to get married, but their parents will not let them (1). One thing, however, they cannot forbid is their love for each other. In fact, their love “burned more intensely for being covered up” (1). They converse by signs and glances. Pyramus and Thisbe find a crack in the wall that separates them, allowing them to talk to each other. Amazing “what will not love discover” (1). Every night, when it is time to say farewell, the lovers are forced to “press their lips upon the wall” (1). They can never give each other a real goodnight kiss or a hug when they need one.…
