Analysis: The Early Years: Developing Practice
Ethical Statement

Title of course: The early years: Developing practice

I am undertaking an E100 course with the Open University that involves the study of children, operating at, 0-7 year old age range. All children names have been excluded to protect their identity and their parents have given permission for their activities to be used in my assignments. The setting manager has given permission for me to follow this course. The settings anonymity will be safeguarded and kept under confidentiality.

Part 1: Analysis of two video sequences:

‘Lark children’s centre’ (study topic 4)

‘Bilingualism’ (study topic 6)

I have chosen the lark’s children centre because in the (E 100 DVD 1 Lark children centre, 09:20-12:33,

I have chosen this sequence because it shows a mixture of cultures and languages, and it is parallel to my setting where children learn through English but where many different languages and cultures are represented. I was extremely interested in how the bilingual teaching assistants work with the small groups and used their first language to support them.

Within the clip it shows how the assistant uses picture books to develop the children thinking telling them in English and in their own language and that is the same technique we use in our setting. In part (2:50-3:13) Serinda, one of the assistant says it’s important to teach children in their mother tongue because it keeps their culture going.

Within my setting we have Caribbean, German, Fijians, Africans and English, and as it shows in the clip the children communicate better in their own tongue. So when the key persons communicate to them in their language you get a lot more from them and it shows that you respect their cultures, and that we have an inclusive practice and we follow the EYFS (DCSF 00261- 2008) , that talks about equality and

Ideas like: (CS3)

● Carrying out home visits before the children starts, so that they feel safe and relax when they start, and getting to know their families and cultures.

● Acquiring more bilingual books and videos.

● Getting wider ranges of multicultural equipment’s.

●Engaging the children in more outdoor nature activities.

●Getting cameras, Dictaphones, tape recorder, answering machine, laptops, and programmes on washing machine. (PS3)

These can help children to explore the uses of ICT

Children learn best in an environment that is secure and caring in order to develop their skills and to achieve positive learning. We create this environment by carrying out risk assessments, working in partnership with parents, and it is (cited in the EYFS on page 19 that practitioners have to do this to comply with the requirements which will help the children to meet their learning goals), (DCSF,2008a) . So you support children’s learning by creating this

As Author Malcolm Gladwell once said, "We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction." Teaching by example goes a long way, and really helps children grow and learn. A bilingual teacher is able to communicate effectively with students while at the same time opening the door to learning a second language. This allows the students to be comfortable with their language rather feeling forced to learn a new language. This supportive type of learning and communicative environment allows the students to embrace their culture and language while moving on to learning a second language. It sets the stage for learning when teachers respond to students who speak borderland languages by allowing them to write, speak, and express themselves in their native tongue and by the teacher's ability to know and understand their language.…

To help children develop their communication and language I will encourage them to. Communicate with each other through activities and showing their feelings. I set up a dramatic play activity for children to interact with others while having fun. During closing circle time I talk to them asking open-ended questions and wait for them to answer. I also like to use songs for language development. For students whose home language is other than English I use different techniques, other songs that will be easier for them and at the same time they will be learning the new language. I also help children with delayed speech, I talk to them a lot and encourage them to participate and communicate with other children so they can improve their talking and language skills.…

Many linguists underline that while introducing the second language to learner, his/her exposure to a given linguistic system is crucial. Thusly, parents striving for teaching their children a secod language/a non-native language often rely on commercial language materials such as books, videos, television programs, etc. Nevertheless, researchers (Kendall King and Lyn Fogle, Georgetown University) have found that live, human interaction such as reading or talking to a child is more effective than presentation of recored sounds (e.g., in television) and, therefore, the best method for fostering both first and second language development. What is more, Other studies have found that, for older children, being read aloud to in the second language increases second language vocabulary much more than watching television in that language (patterson, 2002).…
