Analysis Of Time In A Bottle
In this section of the story An-mei Hsu and Rose Hsu Jordan are at the beach trying to appease some fate controlling force to return Bing, An-mei’s son and Rose’s brother, to return after falling into the ocean. At this point in the story, the paragraph I have chosen, An-mei has given up hope, and Rose is infuriated at failing to help him. The song I chose for the scene was “Time In A Bottle” by Jim Croce. In the paragraph it describes how rose will never forget that moment, “My mother had a look on her face that I’ll never forget. It was one of complete despair and horror, for losing Bing.” “Time In A Bottle” is about what you would do if you had time under your control, it is also about regrets and wishes that never come true. But I’m not talking about her not forgetting her …show more content…
It also describes Rose’s feelings because she is in aguish because she feels that “ everything had failed” her. But the song is like her fantasy. Rose blames herself for Bing's death, but so does everyone else in the family, so if she could just a second chance knows she wouldn't make the same mistake. And I know for a fact that everyone in the family would “ save every day like a treasure and then again spend them with you” if they had the chance to with Bing. Rose would also do this for her mother who is in complete distress. Rose is blindingly angry like An-mei is blindingly depressed. This song also expresses regret, and in an earlier scene they all blame themselves for different reasons, the whole family is devastated. This song doesn't just describe the feeling of these two but the family as a whole. An-mei is trying desperately to use faith to change fate, “If words could make wishes come true.” The song might be saying if you could use prayer or what they said to spend more time or bring people back. 409

When Cisneros mentions how the music stirred something up inside of her, it was as if I could literally feel the chaos going on. It wasn’t necessarily a bad feeling, more like a changing of feelings, more or less. From her memories being thrown around, it started to bring up memories and blurred images into my head, which allowed me to connect with her and share that mutual feeling. Cisneros states that what she had forgotten was a state of being, not a mood. This at first was confusing and then it occurred to me that she meant she had forgotten herself as a child.…

In conclusion, “Brave” by Sara Bareilles is an extension of An-mei’s mother’s love to her daughter. Although her mother’s suicide wounded An-mei, the deep cut eventually healed and translated into An-mei finding her voice and speaking up for herself. In My Pretty Rose Tree different manifestations of love are shown as individual plants are personified. The repetition of ‘flower’ instead of the word ‘rose’ in the first stanza acts as a symbol to represent love and experiences and because of the use of a general term instead of the specific rose it can be perceived as the flower depicting love that’s being given to another woman. The speaker is presented with a flower ‘as may never bore’ yet returns it in loyalty, to the rose tree, then looks to ‘tend to her by day and by night’ nevertheless the rose ‘turn[s] away with jealousy’ portraying love with the imagery of experience as the expectations of light romance come forth. For his affection he is returned with ‘thorns’ suggesting the speaker may be willing to pay the price for a continued relationship as the thorns represent the protection he may hold over her from other lovers and therefore he is ‘delighted’ and reckons them as a symbol of love. In addition to this the speaker may find he is compelled to be in delight with the rose despite its thorns, as he has rejected the flower and the pain of the thorns may be infinitely preferable to his fear of the unknown, just as Adam and Eve with the fruit of knowledge, the flower takes the place of the fruit which offers experience yet comes with tempting propositions.…

She could hear the voices of the ladies singing as they washed, finding comfort in routines, clinging to anything that felt normal, holding on to something of home. The piano melody of the song is very repetitive and only varies when it becomes more syncopated at A5(1:19). The vocal melody for the line ‘Why does my heart feel so bad’ ascends and then descends, reflecting a person’s tone in a question and answer. There is also a counter melody provided by the synth strings and piano, which engages in call and response with the main vocal melody at A6.…

The conversational style of the song in some ways makes it more personal for the listener who can relate in some ways to conversations had with past men. The most obvious theme in the song is isolation. This is noted with the repeating of the words “… making me feel like I’ve never been born”. This is a simple statement that carries with it a meaning to deep for so few words. The other lyrics of the song are a conversation between one woman who already feels isolated and one man who is feeling the same because she no longer wants to be with him. “She said "I know what it's like to be dead. I know what it is to be sad" And she's making me feel like I've never been born. … I said "Who put all those things in your head? Things that make me feel that I'm mad And you're making me feel like I've never been born."”. One says that she wants to leave because she feels that this man is causing her isolation. The man feels she is being influenced and is lost to her ideas that his making her feel depressed. The very thought of this is madness to him. Breaking up is never easy; the heartache that people feel may not be as epic or as sad as Eleanor Rigby, but the feelings of isolation are still true to…

The extended visual metaphor of the girl sitting in the bottle conveys the idea of her feelings trapped inside. The protagonist is shown sitting in the bottle which connects to the idea of a ‘message in a bottle’. It is common that ‘messages in a bottle’ are lost and never found. Responders assume that she feels her thoughts and ideas are trapped inside and will not ever be discovered. The bottle is open however meaning that if she works hard and breaks through the barriers she can find an escape from the darkness that surrounds her.…

It is at this moment when the fourth verse would excellently complement the story, “I planned each charted course/Each careful step along the byway/And more, much more than this/I did it my way.” In these lines, it encompasses Jing-Mei’s entire journey to achieve independence. The first and second lyric summarizes her scheme to fail at the talent show. And the third and fourth lyric shows that even though failing at the talent show caused her much embarrassment, what she got out of it was “more, much more than this, I did it my way.” This last line is key to the theme of the story. It declares that Jing-Mei has finally made some progress in attaining her independence. This first productive step towards her goal gives her some room to exercise her free will. This is something that is crucial to know, since she will act upon that right for the rest of the…

The way the composer uses techniques to convey meaning is important to the overall affect of the song, and the emotional journey it creates. Another way the composer self-reflects on his journey is through the use of similes. The line “Others who broke my heart, they were like Northern Stars” is a simile in the way the composer compares his past lovers to the North Star. He uses this line to emphasise how his losses, led him on his journey to finding true love; that each heartbreak gave him hope to carry on. The line is also symbolic; ‘Northern stars’ is symbolic in comparison with the way that the three wise men were lead to Jesus, in how the composers past lovers had lead him to finding his true love. This gives an easier understanding to the audience on how he felt, and makes it easier for them to sympathise with his experience. In…
