Analysis Of A Child Called It By Dave Pelzer
“A Child Called ‘It’” is a non-fictional novel written by a survivor and activist of child abuse, Dave Pelzer. Among Pelzer’s many works of several autobiographies and self-help books, this novel is the most popular. “A Child Called ‘It’” was published in 1995 by ¬¬¬HCI and has won two literary awards: West Australian Young Readers' Book Award (WAYRBA) for Older Readers (2005), Abraham Lincoln Award (2005) (Good Reads). What makes people want to read “A Child Called ‘It’” is that it is a primary source to one of the most severe cases of child abuse in California (Google). This novel is the first installment of a trilogy that captures the different phases in Pelzer’s experience of abuse at four to twelve years of age. This part of the trilogy …show more content…
Everybody in his so-called family contributed to the suffering of his childhood, but the abuse was primarily from his violent mother. Catherine Roerva, the mother of Pelzer, suffered from depression and addiction to alcohol and drugs. This triggered the abuse towards “The Boy” or “It”, terms she would use to address her little son. Dave had five brothers and it is still unknown why his mother really singled him out and treated him and him alone in that manner. To Catherine, Dave was a bad boy who deserved everything he got from her. Her reasons for abusing him were that she was punishing him for being naughty and disobedient. Roerva’s treatment with Dave was full of some of the worst possible forms of abuse and torture, especially in a mother to son relationship. Other than good maternal treatment amongst many things, one of the greatest things Dave was deprived from was …show more content…
When his mother noticed that Dave was not struggling and begging for food, she knew something was not right since she had not fed him in days. She grabbed him, pulled his mouth open, and rammed her fist down his throat until he had no other choice but to voluntarily throw up in the bowl she had given him. If you thought that was bad enough, you thought wrong, because Mother forced him to eat was in the bowl in front of him. This was not even the first time he was forced to eat something that had already been eaten. He was forced to eat off the diaper of his baby brother. The threat from his mother and the starvation he was experiencing left him not choice but to obey her commands and eat the predigested

Pelzer was the second born of five children. His father was a fireman and, according to Dave, his mother was originally a loving, kind and wonderful person who would try to do anything for her family. The abuse gradually started when he was about five. At that point, Dave could tell what kind of day he could expect to have by the way his mother was dressed. If she was all made up then he could expect a good day, but if she wasn't he knew he would be either hit, yelled at, or punished, or all three.…

With his determination to succeed from his setbacks, and gain power from his calamity’s Dave is the man he is today. Independence means to me being able to make it on your own, and not having to depend on others. Another display of his independence (is his desire to be standing on his own two feet) when he gave to his mother his statement to be independent “All those years you tried your best to break me, and I’m still here. Another is being able to go back to his father who deserted him when Dave needed his father most. His courage to be able to deal with his past, and start a new life is one good example of his courage. Dave’s father didn’t protect Dave from his mother. But his wonderful trait of determination, which is never giving up and going for your goals and not quitting until you’ve achieved it, pulls him past these obstacles in his journey for…

Dave Pelzer was a boy that grew up in the 1970’s and survived a childhood of physical, mental, and emotional abuse to share his story. I decided to do a personality critique on Dave Pelzer because I thought it would be interesting to analyze how abuse can shape the personality of an individual. Dave Pelzer grew up in Daly City, California and was the second born child of five boys. By the time he started school at Thomas Edison Elementary School, he realized he would not live a normal childhood. His mother suffered from alcoholism, which triggered aggression that Dave found himself the target of. He was beaten, starved, humiliated, and eventually lost the privilege of even having a name, and was instead referred to as “It”. Instances of such abuse included being stabbed in the stomach, having a soiled diaper rubbed in his face and told to eat the poop, having to eat ammonia and not being allowed to use the restroom so he had to poop in his pants, laying in a tub of ice cold water then sit outside in the shade in a prisoner of war position and having to make himself throw up after school every day to prove to his mother that he had not eaten anything that day. Dave was constantly told he was a “bad boy”, that he was an embarrassment to the family and that he did not deserve to talk or play with his brothers. Teachers at school noticed the bruises, ragged clothes and Dave’s attitude change. Even though Dave tried to cover up these things with excuses, his teachers were able to prove that he was a victim of childhood abuse (Pelzer, 1995).…

Throughout the novel, one thing Dave desperately craves is respect. He feels like everyone treats him like a little child. Like I said earlier, his mom hides his money so he has to ask her to use the money. The guys who work at the fields also treat him like a child. But the example I will talk about is when he asks his mom about the gun and she says no right away. Even though Dave brought home a catalogue, his mom said there is no way he is getting a gun. When Dave asks his mom if Hawkins gave her his money, she said,”Yeah but you ain't gonna throw it away.” This quote set that scene because when she said that, I knew that it would be hard for Dave to convince her about getting the gun from Hawkins. Later when Dave said that we need a gun, she said that if we did have a gun, you wouldn't have it. Throughout this whole scene at the house, Dave feels like there is no respect because his mom doesn’t really here what he is saying. She keeps saying to go away because she doesn’t want to hear him talk about a gun anymore. I think this is when he realizes that his mom won’t allow him to be a grownup man because she doesn’t really respect him. The craziest part is that Dave is not even allowed to get his money after he is working hard in the fields because his mom doesn’t want him to spend on stuff that is not necessary. This scene contributes to the meaning of the story because his mom treats him like a teen, not a man. She doesn’t allow him to get his money unless he asks which was probably normal back then. He doesn’t have a lot of freedom and he wants more respect. He thinks that getting a gun will gain in more respect from everyone but that is not the case. In conclusion, the gun represents respect because without the gun, Dave believes that he will not have respect from everyone but if he would get the gun, he will gain more respect because he has a dangerous…

How can a big brother who loses his parents in a short period of time survive? How is it possible for him to take care of his little brother at the same time? In A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, the author Dave Eggers describes a long dialogue between him and his brother Toph. In fact, the dialogue is not happening in the real world; instead, it is a “me and I” dialogue. Dave talks about his long day in the beginning of this dialogue, while “Toph” extends the conversation to the discussion of Dave’s inner being. Actually Dave is analyzing his behavior with respect to Toph. From the dialogue, we can tell Dave is desperate and is eager to have a normal life with Toph. Dave’s dialogue with “Toph’ shows Dave is aggressive. Dave is trying to escape the past and use moral authority to condemn other for the purpose of building himself up.…

When I read the book “The child called it”, for a second I thought that it was a make believe story. It’s really sad to see that these stories are real and they happen day by day in this world. The story of David Pelzer was a story that touched my heart because when you are a little boy the number one thing that you really want is someone to give you love and a place to call home, David Pelzer had an awful childhood, he grew up with so much pain. I believe he decided to write this book, because in some way it makes him feel better. When he grew up he let go of his past and wrote his nightmare so everyone knows there is danger in this world but you can live life even when you are mistreated. This is a story of a little boy living in hell and nobody out of his family circle could even imagine what was going on. That makes me think of how many kids go through the same thing and I have no clue.…

In the memoir “A Child Called It”, the author Dave Pelzer’s use of imagery and diction are constantly seen in order to portray the books main ideas. Pelzer tells of his childhood and living with an alcoholic abusive mother. Pelzer enables the reader to create a vivid yet disturbing picture in your head when he tells of the ways his mother would torture him. In Chapter 4 Pelzer’s use of diction and imagery is shown when he writes “A warm sensation oozed from my nostrils. I tried to stop the blood from escaping by breathing in. I snorted bits of defecation back up my nose along with the blood” (pg. 57). Another literary element the author uses is repetition. “I had beaten her. I used my head to survive. I had won! I knew for the first time I had won. I wanted to live. I could never give in to her. I stood tall.”(pg.43) The author repeats the word I to show a turning point in the memoir. This is the first time in the book when Peltzer refers to himself as an actual person and not as an it, he had finally beaten his mother in her own game.…

Never in my life have I encountered a more emotionally draining, motivating through awareness book. Ursula Sunshine Assaid , a five year old little girl, was killed by child abuse. She was mutilated, hit, kicked, starved, fed soap… the list goes on and on. Death From Child Abuse… and no one heard is a book about the last week of Ursula's life. She resided in Florida with her mother Susan and her mother's boyfriend Don. Don had demented views on disciplining children and was convinced that Ursula was a misbehaved spoiled brat that needed to be punished. He took on the role of discipliner, while her mother stood by and watched. The book graphically describes the pain this poor child probably went through the last week before she died.…

The lost boy , written by the author dave pelzer is the novel I have been reading over my summer holidays. The novel is linked with both A child called It and A man called Dave. This book deals with the themes of love and heart break. This theme is clearly conveyed through pelzers use of setting, characterisation and key incidents which I will be pointing out through the length of my essay. This tragic story is about a young boy who has escaped from an alcoholic abusive unloving mother and is in search of a new loving family. After being in and out of five different foster homes, Many people believe foster kids are unimportant and unworthy of love but that didn't stop Daves hope to soon find the Caring and loving family he has been dreaming about all his life.…
