In the starting scene of 'An Inspector Calls' J.B. Priestley used a variety methods and techniques to give the audience an idea about what was most likely to happen throughout the play. because the play is a murder and mystery genre, the audience are not given any real cause on why Eva Smith killed herself. Priestly is providing hints on who might of killed Eva Smith but the audience are not sure on who exactly might of been the cause of her death, which leaves the audience on the edge of their seats until the end of the play.

In the play the inspector says to the Birling’s and Gerald “She was here alone, friendless,almost penniless, desperate”. She didn’t only need money, she needed sympathy and a friend to help her and give her advice.
