American Cultural Experience Analysis
The basic objectives of this course: American Cultural Experience was to basically understand American culture better, at least that is what I am getting from it. I don’t believe that you can understand another countries culture, unless you understand your own, so this class is helping me understand my own culture. I believe that the course has addressed questions like “what does it mean to be an American” very well, and through that I feel that I am understanding my country’s culture better.
One of the concepts that interested me a lot, was the “ideology of individualism” which is basically a concept that is about how the wants, interests and dreams are important to a society, and should be protected by said society. The ideology of individualism

A good example of this would be The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald the novel explores a lot of very American ideals like the American Dream, which is at least in this novel to have so much that you are taken care of for the rest of your life. Also it explores the need that some Americans have for wanting more, we are always expanding, and a good example of this would be the migration to the west. We as a country even tried to rationalize why moving to the west was a good thing. I believe we as country have a lot of the same ideas Gatsby does in this …show more content…
Does America have a national identity? I thought about this a lot when I was writing about “America is the world”. How can our country be the world if it may not have its own identity? If the United States does have its own identity what is it exactly? Is our identity that of a bully? Or is our identity that of a hero who protects the world? Or is it a combination of both? I’m not so sure yet. Our country is countunially evolving into something new, each year, so I believe maybe that is what is so unique about our country, is that we don’t have an identity. Our identity as a country is different. As a country we do have our problems, however I believe these struggles is what is and has shaped our country, and maybe in time we will have our own identity, until then however, we should attempt to better ourselves as a country so that when we finally do have our own identity, it will be something that everyone can be proud

    Issue Common Identity

The questions that is asked to personally answer in this discussion is do I agree or disagree that Americans need a common identity. I agree with Michael Walzer’s, the man in the textbook, opinion; No, Americans do not need common identity. My opinion is why chance America from the way it was and still is; especially, if America is not doing any harm the way it is. D’Angelo and Dougals (2011) stated that European was the first people to immigrant to America [during the 17th century]. That statement tells me that multiculturalism is what America always has been. Immigration has been the primary cause of the growth of the American population from a little less than 4 million in 1790 to over 270 million in 2000 (Hirschman, 2005, para. 18). If it was not for multiculturalism (immigrants) Americans would have over half of the things they have today. For example, over half of American’s vehicles such as Nissan, Honda, Volkswagen and Mazda are made oversea. Nissan’s, Mazda’s and Honda’s vehicles are made in Japan while Volkswagens are made in Germany. Overall, 50% of Americans buy these vehicles. Canada, Mexico, and China import the most of America’s products. Petroleum products, passenger cars, aluminums, and lumbers are the most items Canada imports to America. We all use these items or have used these items before. Crude oil, car parts, video equipment such as DVD players, and electrical parts are the most things Mexico imports to America. Over 80% of American has DVD players in their home. China imports a lot of things to America such as computers, miscellaneous household goods, toys, household furniture, and footwear. Look at all the things listed that we get from China, there is no way we can do without China’s items. If American has a common identity, we would never be the same. We will not have over half of the things have. In my opinion, if is not broke do not try to fix it.…

I would love to say that I am diversity, and that I make up a variation of ethnic culture in my inherited past, but I can't. What I can say is that I currently participate in international, local and state focused service projects that have exposed me to many culturally ethnically diverse experiences. I have worked with Mennonite communities in Belize. I have built playgrounds and parking structures in barrios in Southern California, and I have eaten lunch with the residents and spoken with the people. The connecting piece in all of these experiences is that people just want to be heard, respected and loved. Each one of the many service projects have brought with it a change in lens and understanding of people. As this would pertain to…

Mainly because individualism plays a huge part in the history of the U.S. When the colonies were sent from Britain to this unknown land, they were treated with little to no respect; instead of heroes that discovered new land, they were more like guinea pigs, to test and die for the royals. As American fought for their rights and independence, the idea of making yourself free of controls and being able to do whatever you want without other people suppressing you became the most important cultural value to America. Even though these values might have changed throughout history, but the main idea is still remaining the same. That is the reason why phrases like “It’s a free country…” ,“I have the right!” are most used among…

    AMERICAN CULTURAL STUDIES

    • 404 Words
    • 2 Pages

Cultural studies refers to the notion that the study of cultural processes is theoretically and politically important to an active and productive understanding of the ways in which power and influence manifest themselves in social or political order. The historical roots of cultural studies mainly take us to Britain and its Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies at Birmingham. In Britain, cultural studies in the early days was marked by class, later by gender, race or sexuality and later still by membership of a subculture. The British cultural studies is centred around race, ethnicism and colonizer’s identity. But cultural studies is not just seen in context with the British scenario. It has developed in different nations (Australia, America, Canada, Africa, Italy, etc.) and these nations have their own version of cultural studies. In USA, cultural studies was founded by James Carey, Lawrence Grossberg and George Lipsitz who brought it from Britain to America. Some versions of British cultural studies have been pursued in USA yet it has come to mean something different in USA than in Britain. In USA, cultural studies is influenced by the left-wing intellectual tradition which can be seen in the works of seminal feminist Betty Friedan and Marxian sociologist C. Wright Mills. The work of Michael Denning has also been influential in shaping the field of American studies by importing and interpreting the work of British cultural studies. His works are significantly influenced by Stuart Hall with whom he had spent time at the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies. In his book ‘The Cultural Front ‘, Michael Denning has attempted to provide the American genealogy for cultural studies by reconsidering the popular art of the 1930s and 1940s. He has captured in it, the legacy of 30s Popular Front intellectuals for cultural studies. They were the thinkers who were important and influential to the development of post-war American studies.…
