He was assigned to guard on the top of the valley which was only a few miles from his father’s house. Five union soldiers were hidden in the valley forest and their plan was to attack the southerners on the other side of the cliff. It was his duty to be sure that there’s no enemy soldier,…

The year is 1904. The spectators hold their breath in anticipation as a horse, Hans, stamps his hoof on the blackboard—on which the whole alphabet was written—in front of him, picking out the letters H, N, and A. The audience sighs in relief. Dohna—the name of the officer standing before Clever Hans and his owner Herr Wilhelm von Osten, and to whom they have been introduced earlier. The story begins with Carter Druse being referred to as a criminal for being asleep on his post: ‘The clump of laurel in which the criminal lay' (Pojman, Vaughn 356) yet some may argue that a son shooting his father is immoral and criminal no matter in wartime or not. In keeping with Kantian thinking and philosphy, I think it is the perfect example of putting aside emotions and basing a decision soley on reason and duty.…

In many American’s eyes, leisure is very important. People mix the relaxation and worry-free times of earlier generations. The speaker longs for the “Old Leisure” and the older ways of living (Eliot). The author’s techniques used in the passage from George Eliot’s Adam Bede display the upsetting aspects of the techniques and technologies of the present. In Adam Bede, the tones of eagerness and idleness rush through the sluggish leisure of life.…

The whole construction of the scene represents an implicit justice, the man who has committed a crime is to be punished as an act of justice. This sense of justice is warped as the focus changes from the Federals to an evening days before when Farquhar, in the company of his wife and country home, is told of an opportunity to sabotage the Owl Creek bridge that would hold back the advance of the Federal army further into Southern territory. The informant is, of course, revealed to be a scout of the Northern army and the whole venture revealed to be a trap for the “civilian who was at heart a soldier.” This development throws the balance of whatever justice is being enacted into ambiguity and would paint Farquhar as an innocent, if not gullible, patriot were it not for his characterisation as a man “longing for the release of his energies, the larger life of the soldier, the opportunity for distinction.” In the surreally ironic moments after he falls Farquhar gets…

In the extremely sensitive topic of whether or not abortion is something that should be morally accepted or cast out of thought, there will always be opposing sides to the argument. Many people argue that variables such as rape, infection, and possible death of the mother should be considered for a fair and accurate argument but it all leads to the same question: is abortion right? Harriet McBryde Johnson was a woman that lived her life in a wheelchair but still believed that her life was just as important as everyone elses. On the other hand, Peter Singer is a man who believes that if a baby is born with a deformity or disability, the baby should be aborted to ensure the lives of the family are kept “normal.” Personally, abortion isn’t something that I believe in, but Peter Singer does do an impeccable job of proving his reasoning.…

The inside of Theodore’s cell was bleak and barren. Four greyish-white walls encompassed an equally ugly bed and exposed toilet, this uncomfortably small volume of air would be his home for the next eighteen months (although he reckoned it unlikely he would last that long). For a while the young delinquent starred at the wall opposite him and wondered if social redemption was still a viable option for him, but his thoughts were interrupted by groan of heavy footsteps against an aged wood floor, which suggested to Theo that somebody was walking outside, and the gradual increase in both amplitude and pitch also suggested to him that the owner of the footsteps was advancing towards him. A stout middle aged man presented himself in front of Theodore, he wore a dulled blue prison officer uniform with complete with broken buttons and torn sleeves, which suggested age. “Good morrow Mister Douglas” boomed the officer in a low and sombre timbre “I have been instructed to accompany you to the court yard” he continued. Throwing caution to the wind, Theodore followed his new acquaintance down the corridor for what seemed to be an age, but soon enough a green flickering sign that once read ‘Courtyard’ but now is short of a C and two r’s, appeared above…
