Reading Journal – Always Running – Second Week (Chapter 3-5)

Summary:

Luis describes his life as part of the gang, saying that he and his friends are in a vacant lot they had claimed as their own, furnished with old sofas and covered by plastic to keep off at least some of the rain when an old car comes by. Two of the group go to the street to get a better look and one, Clavo, is shot in the face. Clavo loses an eye in the shooting.
Luis and Rano do many jobs, ranging from cleaning houses, lawns, pools and garages to paper routes. They give all the money to their mother and Luis notes that there is always a need to for more.
As a teenager and after Clavo leaves the neighborhood, Luis becomes friends with a young man named Claudio Ponce, known as Yuk Yuk because of his distinctive laugh. It's Yuk Yuk who introduces Luis to stealing. With Yuk Yuk leading, meet a man named Jandro Mares, who has the teens steal specific cars on order, drive them back to Jandro's garage and strip them down. They also steal bikes, jewelry, electronics and other items for a man named Shed Cowager who pays cash for almost anything they can steal. They soon graduate to residential burglary and robbing convenience stores.
There is race trouble at the beginning of every school year. During one incident, the police arrive to break up a fight, the whites leave without a problem and the Mexicans arrested or expelled. Luis's mother is finally fed up with pulling him out of jail and watching him in trouble, and kicks him out of the house.
Luis suffers a hernia and has to have surgery. Luis describes, in great detail, the effects of a high from "sniffing" intoxicants including various sprays and gas.
Luis begins dating Wilo's younger sister, Payasa. Soon after he breaks up with her, she is admitted to a rehabilitation center for additions. Later, Wilo and Payasa leave the Barrior for what they hope is a better life. Payasa calls Luis one day with the news that Wilo was killed at age 15. Payasa winds up pregnant and "imprisoned" in marriage.

Throughout this story I feel like the theme that is stressed the most would be how Latin Americans had to deal with being discriminated against. Riots broke out between the Zoot Suiters and the public around the L.A. area during the WWII. Latinos were discriminated and accused of being criminals because of their skin and wild style of dressing They were known as the "Zoot Suitors". The suits that they wore had long, broad shouldered coats. Extra baggy pants that fit tight at the ankles. They wore a long chain pocket watch and a broad brimmed hat with a feather in it. This was how Pachucos dressed in their early years. This was how they felt they were able to express themselves but the public and the press tried to use their tradition against…

María was the one who appears brave and stable and Blanca, who seems to follow María in whatever she does. All three had their reason for this journey, their family, and their battles along the way. This movie shows the struggle for individuals who have very little options and even fewer resources. The drug lords preyed on individuals like this, who they knew would risk their lives for, what is seen to them, as minimal investment. The decisions that are made by these girls are not only dangerous they can be deadly. In the end, María appeared to have gotten her happy ending, however the journey to get there was inevitably not worth the risk. This story transformation evolves as different events transpire. The moral journey seems to be the most notable. The choices made along the way. The happily ever after ending is not one that most would imagine, but for a girl from Columbia, it was portrayed as the best outcome for her and her…

The setting takes place in Venice, a little beach town in the Southern California. Derek, the leader of the neighborhood skinhead gang gets arrested and put to jail for killing two members of a Crip gang that tried to steal his car. His little fourteen year old brother has seen everything and testified for Derek, for only that reason he did not get life sentence, and just three years in a prison. In jail Derek learns the truth behind “white power” gangs and what he believed they stand for was all wrong, and not worth to fight for. He has undergone a profound change in Chino, and no longer wants himself or his little brother Daniel to take any part in the skinhead movement. Each new piece of information Derek teaches Daniel of what happened to him in jail combined with Daniel’s own concerns, creates a new consciousness in the boy’s life. This ultimately culminates in Daniel fully appreciating the knowledge he and Derek had shared no longer holds true, and for that reason they both quit the gang and were about to start living their lives differently. Derek was getting his old job back, and Danny with his excellent knowledge of English language and learning skills had a chance to redeem himself in school and start getting good grades. But one morning right before Danny was about to turn in his paper, he went to a bathroom and got shot by a black gang member, because there were a conflict and little misunderstanding earlier that week.…
