A State Report by
DAVID A SALAZAR

WHAT’S IN A NAME
The state of Alabama was named after the Alibamu indian tribe. The meaning of the name is “I open (clear) the thicket.” Alabama has three nicknames, which are: The Heart of Dixie, The Cotton State and the Yellow Hammer State. Alabama is in the geographical center of the Deep South., in the 1950s, the State came up with a slogan: “ The Heart of Dixie” to make Alabama stand out. The Cotton State” was given because Alabama is one of the largest producers of cotton in the United States and “The Yellow Hammer State” was used because during the Civil War soldiers would put yellow cloths on their uniforms and this made them look like the Yellow Hammer bird.

EARLY HISTORICAL FACTS
Alabama’s first known inhabitants were Native American Indian tribes. The Cherokee and the Chickasaw lived in the northern areas of Alabama and the Creek and the Choctaw tribes lived in the South. Alabama’s first known European explores were the Spaniards. They came in the early 1500s. Some believe Alonzo de Pineda was the first explorer in Alabama. In 1540, Hernando de Soto was looking for gold and entered Alabama. This was where he killed thousand of Indians in the bllody massacre known as the Battle of Maubila. A Spanish gold hunter by the name of Tristan de Luna tried to settle in Mobile Bay in 1559. Since his people ran out of food and could not find gold they lost interest in Alabama and left. The French were the first Europeans to permanently settle in Alabama. The Le Moynes Brother built Fort Louie on the Mobile river in 1702. Due to hardships they were forced to move and settle elsewhere. The new site is now known as the city of Mobile, Alabama’s oldest city. In 1754-1763 France and England were at war. At the end of this fight England won, but this victory did not last long. In 1776 The Unitee States of America was formed.

The United States of America can trace it’s roots back to the English. They were frustrated with over-population, poverty, or lack of freedom of religion. In the early 1600s, England sent groups of settlers to the “New World” to establish permanent colonies. They founded the Virginia Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Although the two first colonies of America were similar, they also had very distinct differences.…

He found out that the French had already beat him to this site and they had erected another fort there. The next day the Virginians attacked a French scouting party killing ten soldiers including the commander, and capturing twenty one others. The Indians that were with the Virginians tomahawked and scalped many of the French soldiers who had been wounded in the attack. The soldiers who were mutilated and died were the first people to die in the French and Indian war. Washington and his group left and set up a fort that was called Fort Necessity. However on July 3, 1754, French soldiers attacked the fort killing or wounding a third of Washington’s men before he surrendered. After declaration of independence was adopted, which made clear that United States was not under British rule and each state was independent, there was a huge urge to create a more stable form of government as it was getting difficult for the congress to regulate trade, negotiate foreign trade treaties, or in general exercise have any impact on the national economy because states had more control than government. The first U.S. Constitution, “The Article of Confederation” was introduced in 1771 which was later ratified in 1781. With The Article of Confederation in rule, what to do was still a question on national level as it also created a weak government with no executive or judiciary power. Still all the power was in hand of states, including…
