This is an elegantly written memoir about the life of Greg Williams and his younger brother Mike. The boys live in Virginia with their parents who ran a rowdy bar for military people associated with the bases in Norfolk. Their father was a temperamental, brilliant, exceedingly charming, devious alcoholic. When his fathers marriage and business came apart in Virginia, Greg was about 8 years old, and Mike a bit younger. Their father moved them to Muncie, Indiana and left them with some of his relatives, who had no income and no ability to care for them. The striking aspect of this story is that during this move to Muncie, the boys learned from their father that he was a black man and that in Muncie, they, too, would be black.…

After, reading chapter two and learning about of the CIA “[turned] to the drug trade for an illicit source of fund… beginning the trend toward privatizing war”. For the need to change the world and dominate have lead us to limiting and label others as our enemies because they have or seem to have the potential challenge our western norms. Therefore, it might seem ideal to use money and blood to quell our fears and as a result we are willing to partake in “the pursuit of war by proxy [which] led to alliance between the CIA and drug dealers. Even though Nicaragua…

“But the principal had ended the suspense early when she sent that letter saying Greg would probably fail Math if he didn’t spend more time studying.” “ And you want to play basketball?” His father’s brows knitted over deep-brown eyes. “ That must be some kind of joke . Now you just go into your room and hit those books.” The textual evidence is related to Greg’s conflict by showing that the letter would show that he is failing in math, and when his father saw the letter he wants Greg to study instead of thinking about basketball. The conflict is important to the events in the story because he never would have run away from his house and without meeting Lemon Brown, Greg would still value basketball over family. When Greg learns about Lemon Brown’s son, his values for basketball…

Understanding the struggles that the people behind the African-American Museum of Philadelphia, the DuSable Museum of African-American history in Chicago, the International Afro-American Museum in Detroit, and the Anacosta Neighborhood Museum in Washington D.C is the core of Andrea Burns’ work. These people did not want just to be included as a part of larger museums, but, Philadelphia being a prime example, wanted to be their own museum that fully and completely represented their own culture. They truly wanted to make these exhibits to show their culture and make statements in their own way. For example, the "The Rat: Man's Invited Affliction" exhibit…

There is an old saying, “that there are always two sides to every story,” and this holds true regarding the study of English and History. Throughout my college experience I have found that the information in history textbooks is generally told from a political or outside, after the fact, perspective. Granted, some history classes offer up more personal texts, like that of W.E.B. DuBois’ Souls of Black Fold in History 3393: African American History. However, historical texts still maintain a certain factual tone and/or include statistical data regardless of any personal relevance to the author’s life. English and literature courses present characters and their stories for a reader to become invested in, all while being set in or taking place…

I am no different from any other 15 year old high schooler in the US. I don’t do anything extraordinary, there's not much that I can do that everyone else can’t and vica versa. But at the same time, there is not a single other person with my skillset or that thinks exactly like I do. I won’t ever find another me. I am unique to this world. Humans regard rarity as a value, this is seen with how we value diamond rings, the gem itself serves the wearer no purpose yet it is still highly valuable. Rarity is value. And so I, a normal person am infinitely valuable because not only do I have astounding potential, I am the only one to ever have my exact skillset, mindset, or…
