He used these underground releases to drum up anticipation for his next official album, the breakthrough effort Tha Carter. Released in 2004, the album seemed familiar on one hand with Mannie Fresh’s production, but the Wayne on the cover was a dreadlocked surprise, and the rhymes he laid on the tracks showed significant growth. His marketing skills had become sharper, too, and it was no mistake that the album’s hit single, “Go DJ,” mentioned hip-hop’s greatest tastemakers right in the title. It reached number five on the singles chart, and with a guest shot on Destiny’s Child’s number three single, “Soldier,” Wayne had officially crossed over. On the flip side, his street cred was supported by a slew of mixtapes released in 2005, including the popular titles Dedication with DJ Drama and Tha Suffix with DJ Khaled. Cash Money’s future was no longer in doubt and traditional music business rules no longer seemed to apply, as tracks would be leaked onto the Internet and various DJ’s mixtapes. “Get Something” was another bold move, as a Universal-funded video was made without the track ever seeing official…

The Hip Hop music genre, on the rise since the 1970 's, includes many variations of beats and melodies which unlike other music genres, do not follow a certain pattern or outline. Especially during this day and age, melodic tracks are free to sound however the artist wants them to, without needing to adhere to a certain pattern. This ability makes it very easy for Disc Jockeys and Rappers to create endless possibilities and make their tracks sound however they wish. In the…

“Rappers – I monkey flip them with the funky rhythm I be kickin’. Musician – inflict the composition” are the first words heard off of one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time. Nas’ debut album Illmatic is considered to be one of hip hops foundational documents and has earned itself a large number of awards, recognitions and record breakers. However, Illmatic was only the start of the icon known as Nas. Nas would go on to selling 7 U.S. platinum records, being featured numerous singles and becoming a household name for fans of hip hop. Nas is known for his intellectual rhyme flow, while being an outsider who rhymes about many things he has witnessed (Sewer 3). Besides being an iconic rap artist, Nas…

Record labels began dictating to the artist what was to be considered Hip-Hop. Artists like Soulja Boy Tell’em, Drake, and Lil’ Wayne are at the forefront of the Hip-Hop of today. The majority of the content in their music reflects the voice of the younger Hip-Hop generation. Songs like Lollipop, Get Money, and No Hands only talk about money and sex. The overall criticism has been the lack of diversity in the music. Crank that Soulja Boy was a big hit for Soulja Boy Tell’em but to Hip-Hop purists, the song lacked creativity and lyrical content. Another difference between the eras would be in radio play. Laffy Taffy, by D4L, was another song that was a big hit commercially that several people use as an example for the lack of creative skill and musical integrity. Twenty years ago, you would turn on the radio and hear different records with a variation of styles and song content. Today, if you on the radio, you will hear what many would consider the same type of rap record being made by different artists. The reason behind the lack of creativity is believed to be because artists and record labels are more concerned about record sales and…

Twenty years after it's release, Nas' classic album, Illmatic, is still revered as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. Nas obviously takes the credit for this phenomenon, showcasing mastery skill level of lyricism and delivery at the young age of 17 years old. The album catapulted the young man from Queens into stardom with songs like "The World Is Yours," "One Love", "Halftime", and "N.Y. State of Mind," to name a few. Nas was able to cement his place in hip hop through thought provoking lyrics displayed over flawless production from a dream team of producers, handpicked by the emcee himself. The production team, including Q- Tip, Pete Rock, Large Professor, and DJ Premier, will forever share the glory and hold the bragging rights…
