Affirm-Personal Narrative
An Upbeat Ascent Wind in my face, I tramp up the mountain. Only the summit lays ahead, a monument of fear, casting doubt in the hearts of adventurers. The cold penetrates the security of my jacket rendering me stiff. A brave drop of sweat fights its way down my forehead, only to be swept away by the enemy. Craning my neck, I see the endless ascent of sharp rocks and jagged edges. Cold and discouraged, I fall into despair. Today was the day. I was going to summit Mt. Hyndman. Piling into the van, my cousins and I got ready to leave. Upon arriving, we set up camp and got ready to rest for the big day ahead. After a restful night, we prepared to leave camp, having packed our bags with food, equipment, and an assortment of questions. As we hiked up the steep terrain, the temperature started to fall. Soon the once cotton-candy clouds threatened to rain. A chilling wind swished down the mountain side rustling leaves and bringing shivers down my spine. What once seemed like a wonderful opportunity , was now a death sentence. When we neared the final ascent, the hail came. Hurling down at tremendous speed, the bullets pierced my thin jacket and forced me to retreat to my thick coat. As we neared the saddle, the wind blew even harder, driving right through our defenses, chilling me to the bone. We were …show more content…
It wasn’t easy, and it was intimidating. While we climbed higher toward the peak, the terrain got steeper and steeper until we were forced to climb on our hands and knees. The higher we climbed the closer we were pushed to the edge of the drop off. It was a gut-wrenching sight. The wind had become a gusty gale, threatening to throw us off. As we shimmied farther towards our goal, the wind lashed out, the hail struck with new ferocity, and my mind fought to keep in control. And as I climbed over the final obstacle, my terror turned to triumph, and I stood on top of the

Now this is where I`m supposed to write “all about me”. This is where I become lost. I mean, come on. I wouldn`t know where to start. Two years ago, on a cold Saturday morning, I prepared for my first ever track tryout. I took a shower, put on my clothes, and got into the car. On my way to practice, I felt strong physically, but I also had an undefined, jittery feeling about how the day was going to go.…

Bill Bryson and Katz do not conquer the entire Appalachian Trail, but more importantly, they are able to conquer and overcome personal flaws while trying to do so. Bryson and his friend, Katz set out for a journey, their main intentions being to complete the Appalachian trail, and reconnect with nature. Throughout their journey, Bryson and Katz experience grueling days of long hikes and stormy weather, sometimes reaching below zero. Even though this seems miserable, and at times it was, the challenges helped both men to better themselves. Katz and Bryson gained a sense of pride by experiencing a harsh and deep pain, when hiking for long hours each day. By the end of their journey, they had become much more “slender and fit”(274). Even though they didn’t reach the end of the trail, physical strength was something they were able to leave with, and feel proud of. Looking back on the hardship and adversity the men faced was a significant accomplishment in itself, knowing that they were able to push through it, no matter how difficult.…

Everest including images to better visualize the text. The author first begins the story in the middle when they are returning to the bottom of the mountain. He tells who didn’t survive or who had contracted a fatal injury he then continues to tell us about the impact of the challenge “… to the tragedy the Everest climb has rocked my LIFE to its core …” (Pg. 3). This quote reflects his perspective on the expedition. His vivid figurative language and exquisite imagery pertaining to every event made the passage not only highly realistic but parallel . It was as if the reader was with him and they struggles and felt lightheaded and experienced the same minor injuries. Although the author was advised not to pursue the expidition, he ignored and continued to walk in his ambitions. “Finally I woke up enough to recognize that I was in deep shit and the cavalry wasn't coming so I better do something about it myself” (Chpt. 20). This quote portrays his perspective on his situation and how he feels about the potential overall outcome of his actions. This quote also reflects his personality as a strong-willed individual. He was able to single handedly accomplish getting to base 4 half-frozen on the verge of death. Not only did he rely on teammates that left but was able to live using strength and determination with his mighty…

Despite reports of significant snow levels at higher elevations, it appeared to be a seasonable day and we chose to complete a day hike to Rocky Top, classified as one of the most strenuous climbs in the park. We climbed seven miles and 3,600 feet, first in the mud, and then in the snow, to reach the summit, only to be greeted by nasty winds and below-freezing temperatures. We were wet, cold, and dirty and it was the closest that I came to both vomiting and collapsing of fatigue on a hike, and the only time that I hallucinated quite a bit. But I never quit the…

After giving the pile of old tree limbs she was pointing at a good second stare I saw it. There was a roof slightly sticking up from a mass of brush. I had lived right up the hill from this location for 9 years and had been down to the camp dozens of times, but never have I ever noticed this small roof that was roughly 100 meters away from the camp. We sprinted on through the scraggly brush, being pulled back on by plenty of branches and jumping over small creeks. Tumbling, jerking, and fleeing was pulling everyone back, but yet was pushing everyone forward. We stopped dead in our tracks after what felt like hours of sprinting and adjusted to the spontaneous sight that was in front of us, sending my eyes into…

As a particularly curious and proactive member of society, I consider myself to be civically engaged; although the degree of engagement can be argued. Personally, I believe that small things make up the larger picture, so my engagement is mostly interpersonal, as small interactions can set of chain reactions. Speaking out on issues with (or to) friends, politely engaging strangers in conversations and presenting different points of view, and constantly seeking to better myself is how I remain aware and knowledgeable on current issues, and also how I continue to learn new things and refine my thoughts. Not everyone is born to take center stage, and so we must all strive to do what we can, even if it’s simply a few words of encouragement or a…

However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…
