Melanie J. Zimmer-Gembeck and Ellen A. Skinner (2008) in “Adolescents Coping with Stress: Development and Diversity”, describes how adolescents cope with their stress. It is important to consider that adolescents use many different strategies to cope with stress, and there are also many reasons for adolescents to have stress. Stress is all around adolescents in their everyday life. First of all there are many ways that adolescents can deal with their stress. In Zimmer-Gembeck’s and Skinner’s recent studies they discovered the 12 main categories of coping with stress for adolescents are problem solving, information seeking, helplessness, escape, self-reliance, support seeking, delegation, social isolation, accommodation, negotiation, submission and Opposition (pg 134.) If adolescents were to just ignore their stress that might hurt them more mentally then the stress itself is actually hurting them. Secondly there are multiple reasons why adolescents can have stress. According to Zimmer-Gembeck and Skinner “Approximately 25% of adolescents will experience at least one significant stressor...” “An even greater number of adolescents experience chronic stressors and daily hassles.” (pg 132) Starting at a young age you are exposed to stress but it progressively gets worse into your adolescent years with school, work, home life and friends. For the most part if you deal with your stress the right way you can keep it under control and keep yourself from a stress free environment.

    In the article from USA Today the main focus is on the negative affect of stress on young teens. With school causing a staggering amount of stress in these young adult lives they are already being set up for failure.
