Active Listener In Effective Communication
‘‘An effective listener is aware that communication is a two-way process. Unless a listener accepts a share of the responsibility for its success, communication is doomed to failure.’
Explain what is ‘active listening’ and how can one become a more effective listener? How does ‘good listening’ benefit a staff member? Illustrate with the help of suitable examples. (20 marks)
Active listening is a person’s willingness and ability to hear and understand. It is a state of mind that involves paying and attention to the speakers, avoiding premature judgement and reflects understands, is able to clarify information, summarise and share it. The listener has the commitment to make the effort to understand what the speaker is trying to say, as well as the speaker has the responsibility to be understood.
An active listener is a listener that receives interprets and reacts to the speaker messages. Furthermore, it is a conscious and positive act being an activity of the brain that consciously or unconsciously can be turned on to off.

To become a more effective listener a person needs to understand the weaknesses of the listening that he has. It is a good exercise the self-examination (Ferrari, 2012)
To develop need directly rationed to listening skills a person has to be open to change, dealing with the people feelings, accept the criticism, understand what the people think before to make a judgement, the use of feedback to make the necessary changes, be open to new ideas, put themselves in the position of the others.

In the University of Buenos Aires, (Argentina) a teacher had explained about the effective communication getting an active listening. The instance was a doctor trying to explain to an aboriginal woman how she had to use the vaginal ovule to avoid a vaginal fungus (this ovule is going inside the vagina). The doctor just replied, “Use this ovule one per day during ten days”. The woman nodded with the face expressing in a nonverbal communication yes. The doctor asks whether she had any doubt to use this drug and at the same time gave to her a box with ten ovules. The woman replied no. After two days the nurse calls the doctor explaining that the woman had a stomach-ache. After that, the doctor made a check on the woman’s stomach. Then he asks the woman about what she ate or drunk, the woman replied, “even though she consider that the pills were so big she swallow them, so she thought that pills probably cause it”.
Here is a good instance of an active listening, in addition, some tools were missing; the doctor hasn’t paid attention to the real doubts of the aboriginal woman, he hold a judge, thinking that the woman really understood the scientific explanation. He didn’t make a reflection of the woman’s

    Developed by psychologist, Carl Rogers, Active listening is defined as listening to someone attentively in order to effectively receive the message that the speaker is trying to convey (Robertson, 2005). The foremost goal of Active Listening is to assist clients in telling their story, as well as to develop a trusting and open relationship in which clients can confide in. This objective is reached most effectively by applying a common theory (Comer and Drollinger 1999; Gearhart and Bodie 2011) that suggests active listening is a multi-dimensional process involving the stages of sensing, processing, and responding.
