They keep trying to trick Hamlet into blurting out his thoughts, but it doesn’t work. Claudius is aware of the threat Hamlet has for him. When Hamlet enters the room, he knows he is being spy-ed on and he knows who. He said his famous soliloquy “to be or not to be, that is the question...” basically meaning we are born, we live, and we die. Is it better live or to die. Do we sleep in death or do we cease... etc... Hamlet is looking for a smart way to confirm the ghosts statement and that Claudius is in fact the murderer of Hamlets father. This was the perfect opportunity for Hamlet to indirectly blame Claudius. Spying and tricking are big themes in this play. Hamlet will trick Claudius twice. First during the play of his and second, by the illusion of him thinking he is crazy. When Hamlet questions Ophelia about where his father is, she lies to him, labeling Ophelia as a liar. The courtier’s, soldier’s, scholar’s, eye, tongue, sword, Th' expectancy and rose of the fair state, The glass of fashion and the mould of form, Th' observed of all observers, quite, quite down! And I, of ladies most deject and wretched, that sucked the honey of his music vows, Now see that noble and most sovereign reason Like sweet bells jangled, out of tune and harsh; That unmatched form and feature of blown youth Blasted with ecstasy.” Claudius first thought that the reason behind Hamlets madness was because his love, because Polonius didn't let Ophelia have any contact with him, but after this scene,Claudius doubts that love is behind his craziness. “Love? His affections do not that way tend. Nor what he spake, though it lacked form a little, Was not like madness.” Claudius also thinks that he is getting tricked by Hamlet. He is
