f there is one thing that everyone can agree on, it would have to be that no matter where you are in the world, there is always going to be disagreement. Today’s society is made up of such an abundant number of controversial issues. One of the most controversial issues being abortion- the act of intentionally termination a pregnancy resulting in the death of the fetus (Kreider, A. personal communication, March 24, 2011). Abortion is both constitutionally and morally wrong, and should be illegal in the United States in all but two cases: if the mother was raped (and pregnancy was as a result of the rape) or if the mother’s life would be put in endangerment by the pregnancy. Abortion is murder at any stage of pregnancy, and acts against the U.S. Constitution. Not only does abortion harm innocent babies, but abortion also rises the risk of medical complications for the mother. Majority of women who choose to abort regret the decision later in life. There is always a way to prevent pregnancy, and if by some chance pregnancy does occur and the baby is not wanted there are other options besides abortion. “When a murderer kills a woman who is with child; the murderer is charged with two counts of capital murder. Why is this?” (Huffman, 2010). The reason is because a fetus is a person whether he or she is born or unborn. Life begins at conception, since living is defined as the ability to grow; and growth is occurring in the mothers womb. Did you know that the most growth in a person’s entire life occurs before birth? Abortion is murder at any stage of pregnancy because it is ending the life of a human being. According to Heritage House (2009), at the very moment that the sperm penetrates the mother’s egg, a unique individual with all his/hers features is formed. Abortion is legal up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy and sometimes more. Yet a merely 21 days in the mother’s womb the fetus has blood vessels, sex organs and a heart beat. Majority of women don’t even know that they are pregnant at this stage, but their baby already has a heart beat and the ability to reproduce. It is immoral and injustices to deprive an unborn, but nevertheless living, child from a valuable feature (Mappes &ump; Zembaty, 2007). At 7 weeks of development the individual has all its facial parts, arms, legs, skin, bones, organs and muscles (Papalia, Wendkos &ump; Feldman , 2009). The fetus has just about all the same features that make someone a person, the only difference is that the fetus can’t survive outside the mothers womb. So why is it that if one, for example, kills the person next to you, one is convicted of murder. But one is not convicted of murder if one ends the life of a fetus with the same traits? Murder is the act of killing a person. Abortion is the act of killing a person. Therefore, abortion is murder. So why should a mother who does not want a child she conceived be allowed to have an abortion and not be charged with murder? Abortion abolishes an innocent human life and is unconstitutional. As a civilized society, how can one permit a sacred human life to be taken way without choice. The United States has allowed for such an unethical thing to occur for years, by making abortion legal. But abortion is against the U.S. Constitution and should be banned. You may ask why is abortion against the constitution? Well abortion is against the constitution because if opposes Amendment XIV: Sections 1 that states No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges of immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property….; nor deny to any person the equal protection of the laws (Constitutional Index). Abortion violates this amendment first off, by depriving the fetus of life. As we discussed earlier, abortion is the killing of a fetus. Neither does abortion provide the developing fetus with liberty as the child has no choice, unlike the mother who already had the choice...
