A Hero In S. E. Hinton's The Outsiders
What do you think defines a hero? Heroes in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders help people a lot. Johnny, Darry, and Dally are all heroes because they help people in different ways.

Johnny is a hero in The Outsiders because he has helped people. The first way he has helped people is when he killed Bob to save Ponyboy from drowning. This helps people because that way Ponyboy survives and does not die. The second way he has helped people is when he decided to turn himself in. This is an act of heroism because he helps Ponyboy because it makes his life easier by not having to hide out all his life and by being able to go places and be a real person again. The third and final way Johnny is a hero is because he saves kids from the burning church. This helps people because it saves many kids' lives while risking his own life. Johnny risked his life so many times for many people and that is why he

He helped others out by pulling Johnny and Ponyboy out of the church and saving their lives. He also fought in the rumble for his greaser friends even though he should have been in the hospital getting better. Dally also kills himself because Johnny died, though this really isn't heroism it shows his love for his greaser friends. This is why I think Dally should be a hero.

Darry is a hero in The Outsiders because he helps the Curtis brothers a lot. He helped Sodapop and Ponyboy stay in a home with him. He works 2 jobs in order to get enough money for him and his brothers and sacrificed college. College is a big deal to him because he got good grades , had a scholarship, and was going to play sports. Darry has always made sure Ponyboy stays on track in school. Darry has made sure the Curtis brothers had everything they needed and made sure they were on track with their lives. He made sure that the Curtis' stayed good even after their parents died. That is why Darry should be a

In the beginning of the story Dally and Ponyboy didn't get along the best. But throughout the story they became closer. Dally’s death happened right after he stole from the store. The cops showed up and circled around Dally under a street light. Dally soon pulled out a gun and acted like it was loaded but it really wasn't. How would the cops know that? They did not know that. After the cops told Dally to put the gun down multiple times and Dally still wouldn't do it so they shot him. Ponyboy took this really hard because him and Dally had gotten very close. Also dally had helped Ponyboy and Johnny out whenever they needed something. So I think that Ponyboy was really mad because he didn't stop it from happening. Also now Ponyboy is dealing with two deaths of his very good friends. “I knew he would be dead, because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted” said Ponyboy (Hinton…

Dally is a criminal. Just like Ponyboy is peaceful, Dally is violent. “He’s the type of person who’ll probably find the fight. (pg 28)” This can be easily interpreted to me that he'll go looking for one and if there isn't one around he'll definitely start one. The only reason a person would want to fight is because they have a deep seeded resentment against their status in life and the crave excitement. This is confirmed when Ponyboy says, “Dally blew off steam in gang fights… (pg 47)” That means that he wasn’t fighting for a cause, nor for monetary gain. He also slits tires for fun. Both of these clean cut fact point towards an obvious conclusion. It can only mean that for him, violence and crime is a form of entertainment. He has nothing…

He comes from an extremely abusive home and needs the greaser gang just as much as they needed him. He needs them for protection and a sense of purpose. While the gang needs him because Johnny gives them a sense of purpose and justification of their violence without Johnny, the gang would be next to nothing. Johnny has big black eyes, a tanned face, jet-black hair with grease in it and has a slight build. Due to his father constantly beating him and his mother who always ignores him the greasers are always looking out for Johnny and trying to protect him. Dally who is the leader of the greasers especially watches out for Johnny, in return he hero worships Dally. Throughout the novel Johnny changes at various times.
