A Career As A Legislators
The occupation I have been accredited with is Legislators. This can be found under the Government and Administration cluster. The job of legislators is to examine, vote, and introduce bills that determine how taxpayers' money is spent and what laws are going to be enforced on their community. The thing that all of the careers in this cluster have in common is that they all were voted in or delegated to government positions liable for composing and executing civic policy.

Legislators generally plan investigations, hold hearings, and hear from constituent units and further associations interested in the policies being advised. One of the finest components of this career is that no experience prior is required to serve as a legislator.

The first step they must achieve is reelection. The reelection stage is when they establish a home style. By earning the trust of their district’s voters, it is easier to justify their decisions of policy making. This makes the goals of receiving power and good public policy possible. These next two steps involve a congressman’s career in Washington. They must achieve to pass laws that are beneficial to their home district. Good public policy is established to keep existing voters and to allow for a new base of supporters. Once they do this, congressmen must find a balance between their home style and Washington career. First, to distribute their power, a congressman can appoint a higher number of local staff. This makes up for their absence at their home district while working in Washington. The next way a congressman must balance their power is to use their influence in Washington to benefit their home district. The happier a congressman’s support system is, the more likely it is that they will get reelected. When a congressman finds the proper balance of the three main goals, it will ensure a thriving…

    Congress at the Grassroots

Richard Fenno's work, Congress at the Grassroots, provides an in depth look at the decline of the old time politics of the South in the late twentieth century. Fenno's case study examines a more recent era but confronts some of the same problems faced by the fictional governor. With changing times and technologies, how do the politics and politicians of the past fare with the modern era? In an effort to examine the recent political shifts in the Deep South and its Congressional districts, the author selected a noteworthy area--the district held by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Instead of selecting the controversial Gingrich as an illustration of change, Fenno chose a long-time Democratic predecessor and the Republican heir to the Georgia district. The area south of Atlanta, for generations a rural, conservative Democratic area, quickly changed to a suburban, Republican-dominated one from the 1950s to the 1990s. Fenno's goal was to provide an in depth look at this dramatic change that impacted the South and the entire nation. He also sought to examine these relationships as a cause in the increasing "polarization, along party lines" of the House of Representatives which made Congress "less civil, less manageable, and, to many, a less satisfying process" (p. 151).…

I've experienced the civilian side of role-play and I enjoyed it to some extent. After being a civilian for a few weeks I noticed a constant trend of getting robbed and dying by gangs... I felt I needed something more than just getting killed/robbed, and that more was a better role-play experience on the other side. Thus, I joined to Department of Corrections as an Cadet. I must say joining Law Enforcement was one of my better decisions I made on CG. But yet again, after a few months of progressing through the ranks and experiencing the RP side of being an LEO, I didn't like the role-play feedback I was getting out in the field. To become a member of EMS would be my last best resort, and regardless of me experiencing poor RP or good, I'm here…

Constituency careers pursue the goal of reelection, while Washington careers pursue the goals of influence in the House and the making of good public policy. When a House member is at the stage of a constituency career, they will most likely leave their families at home, and only be thinking about the goal of reelection. First-term members get to go home more frequently then their senior colleagues, however, most have not been a congressman yet. The first two years are spent getting reelected while the last two years are spent getting a district so they can be reelected. What is meant by congressman is being able pursue goals that go above and beyond just getting reelected. This seems like a viscous cycle due to the fact that a House member’s…

Upon graduation, I plan to enter the career field of Political Consulting. To effectively enter this career path, I will need to not only obtain marketing skills but also market myself. The field of work is continuously evolving as new skills are becoming required to enter the field. In order, to be successful it is necessary to know how voters/consumers think about their decisions, how to brand, and how to form advertising and marketing strategies to reach the goal of winning an election. These are all skills a marketing minor would help me to pursue to gain enough knowledge and eventually work for a political consulting firm and start my own in the future. However, this goals would not be reached without the needed skills for marketing which…

One role I would be interested in exploring is a legislative liaison. A legislative liaison is the communication between a person (citizens) and the legislatures (policy-makers). Legislative liaisons are very important in policy-making as they are the connection to what citizens want, and what needs to be done to better benefit their needs. They research, discuss, and help pass policies that need to be addressed at a legislature level. I would be very interested in exploring this profession as it places a social worker among high ranking officials that make policies happen. Having a social worker as a legislative liaison…

Professor Ricchiuto, J., (August 13, 2011) lecture during residency on Executive Communication on topic Political Savvy in Organization was an eye opener for me. One of the most powerful but often overlooked skills that a Leader needs is Political Competence. Whether to sustain in an Organization or to successfully get things done, a good leader must understand what others have in their minds, whom to approach and how to influence and build consensus from others. The know-how of what-to-say, what-not-to-say and how to execute also matters. It is a skill that requires high social awareness, capacity to connect and convince people.…

Policy actors are using every means possible to get the results they want, and they aren't necessarily representing the public interest. They have strategies that they use to maximize their interests. The essential skills needed are bureaucratic knowledge, networking (or access to individuals within the bureaucracy), an understanding of the size of constituency, money for political contributions, and the resources to mount a media driven campaign. But ever all this isn't enough; they also need to know all the rules and the culture of the policy environment.…

The legislators of the state have an opportunity to create and process bills that may be approved. They create laws and regulations. These men/women also have the opportunity to read bills and amendments as the legislative group is in session. The people who work in businesses or industries can benefit from communicating with state legislators in hopes of better working laws and conditions. These lawmakers help in creating ethical laws for human rights. The lawmakers bring home a check just like a working person in a business although in my 57 years I have only had the opportunity to visit with only one state legislator. This lady was a thoughtful woman and seemed very concerned about people and children in general. I met her at a church summer camp around three to four years ago for children ages 9-18. This lady served the children and helped around camp and donated her time just like many others as volunteers. The things we discussed were not related to state or local issues at all, but things that related to serving the children at camp. The children were the priority so this state representative mainly focused on the children like everyone else did. I did hear later that she was trying to get a law passed in the state of Missouri to try and help keep funding in the public school system. This lady was harassed or even bullied because of the stance she took on the school issue. I…
