Write your Centre number, candidate number and name on all the work you hand in. Write in dark blue or black pen. Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid. Answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B. You are reminded of the need for good English and clear presentation in your answers. At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together. All questions in this paper carry equal marks.

2 Answer one question from Section A and one question from Section B. You should write between 600 and 900 words for each composition.

Section A: Narrative/Descriptive/Imaginative Writing 1 Write two contrasting pieces (between 300–450 words each), the first about a place before a flood and the second about the same place after a flood. In your writing create a sense of mood and place.

Write the opening chapter of a novel called Escape from the City, in which a narrator describes her or his experiences of moving to a rural area. In your writing create a sense of the narrator’s outlook and mood.

Write a short story called The Curse. In your writing create a sense of mystery and suspense.

Imagine you are flying high over a particular landscape. What can you see? What can you hear? What do you feel?

Section B: Discursive/Argumentative Writing
