Understanding the Five Pillars of Islam can be confusing if you do not have an open mind. As any religion they all have similar foundation. How we should live and the values of live, that are different from others. The Five Pillars are just that, how they believe their values should be in the religion and culture. The first of the five is Shahadah means to witness or to testify. Muslims bear witness to the oneness of God by reciting the creed "There is no God but God and Muhammad is the Messenger of God." Simple but profound statement expresses a Muslim's complete acceptance of and total commitment to Islam. If one does not share this belief then they cannot practice. Personally I have a very open mind and feel that all religions are true and can relate to all religions. The second of the Five Pillars is Salah the prayer the practice and worship. Islamic faith is based on the belief that individuals have a direct relationship with God. The world's Muslims turn individually and collectively to Makkah, Islam's holiest city, to offer five daily prayers at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and evening. Friday congregational service is also required. Although salah can be performed alone, it is meritorious to perform it with another or with a group. It is permissible to pray at home, at work, or even outdoors; however it is recommended that Muslims perform salah in a mosque. A very time consuming religion and the other members might be demanding for you to attend the services or you are not a true to God. The third of the Five Pillar is Zakat, almsgiving meaning giving to others. Social responsibility is considered part of one's service to God, act of zakat enshrines this duty. Zakat prescribes payment of fixed proportions of a Muslim's possessions for the welfare of the entire community, for its neediest members.
