5.03 Regionalism: Faulkner “A Rose for Emily”
Part 1- Character Identification:
1: Emily Grierson – Emily is a mysterious character who changes from a bright and hopeful young girl to a isolated and secretive old woman. Devastated and alone after her father’s death, she is the main source of pity for the townspeople. After a life of having potential suitors rejected by her father, she spends time after his death with a newcomer, Homer Barron, although the chances of his marrying her decrease as the years pass. Bloated and lifeless in her later years, her hair turns steel gray. She eventually poisons Homer and seals his corpse into an upstairs room.
2: Colonel Sartoris -A former mayor of Jefferson. Colonel Sartoris absolves Emily of any tax burden after the death of her father. His elaborate and kind gesture is not noticed by the succeeding generation of town leaders.
3: Tobe -Emily’s servant. Tobe, his voice assumed to be rusty from never using it, is the only connection that Emily has to the outside world. For years, he dutifully cares for her and tends to her needs. Eventually the townspeople stop bothering him for information about Emily. After Emily’s death, he walks out the back door and never returns.
4: Judge Stevens -A mayor of Jefferson. Eighty years old, Judge Stevens tries to gingerly handle the complaints about the smell coming from the Grierson property. To be respectful of Emily’s pride and former position in the community, he and the aldermen decide to sprinkle lime on the property in the middle of the night.
5: Homer Barron -A foreman from the North. Homer is a large man with a dark complexion, a booming voice, and light-colored eyes. A hard and demanding boss, he wins many admirers in Jefferson because of his outgoing nature and good sense of humor. He gains an interest in Emily and takes her for Sunday drives in a yellow-wheeled buggy. Although his nice attributes, the townspeople view him as a poor, if not scandalous, choice

The courthouse scene is the most important scene because it determines the plot for the rest of the novel. At the courthouse, a young African American male named Jefferson is sentenced to death row for crimes he has not committed. Appalled by this, Jefferson’s godmother, Miss Emma forces a school teacher named Grant Wiggins to care for Jefferson. Grant teaches Jefferson the life qualities of becoming a man so that he will not die a “hog”. Gaines uses in-depth characterization, styles, and themes to create his classic work.…

4.Judge Stevens~ Mr. Stevens was the one who raised the question of why the townspeople did not notice the stink until now and it have been two years. In my opinion what he meant was that they all should've have known about Emily and should've just kicked her out of the town. However I still cannot wrap my head around this character just what is his role in this story.…

She has made everyone in the community scared of her in a sense because she is very mysterious, unkempt, and the very few times they actually have encounters with her, she always has this somewhat mean “death” look on her face. The person who she sees the world through the most, her servant Tobe, she also has shown no interest in. Which is ironic seeing how he is also isolated and he has complete polar opposite characteristics than she does. “These qualities are shown through Tobe who reveals humility, patience, endurance, courage, and pity. A clearer picture of Miss Emily’s true nature is therefore given by her sharp contrast with Tobe’s wholeness.” (Stafford 530) Miss Emily is a very selfish, bitter, independent, perverse woman who doesn’t view life as Tobe, or any other sane person for that matter, does. She wanted Homer Baron all to herself and didn’t want him going anywhere, so she did what she had to do to keep him around for good.…
