Summer Reading

Year 10
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Once again we are looking forward to the summer reading programme for our St. Andrew’s students. This programme will essentially enable our students to maintain and improve their reading skills and vocabulary over the vacation period and prepare for the English courses. Moreover, we hope that your children will find pleasure in the ideas, people, places and writing styles that they will encounter.
Since most of our students already have access to a Kindle, ipad or other E-reader, this year we would encourage students to bring an electronic copy of the compulsory novel ‘Lord of the Flies’ to class. This move comes in response to parent concerns over the weight of students’ bags and paper use. This will significantly reduce costs for most parents in the short term and for all in the long term. It will make travelling with three texts over the summer much easier and remove any wait time for paper copies to arrive. A basic Kindle will be sufficient and the Kindle app for other devices is recommended. Please note that reading on smartphones in class will not be allowed.
If you prefer a paper copy, please note that Logos Bookstore has again kindly undertaken to make available most of the titles and provide an on-line ordering service. In addition books may be available at United Bookshop, Island Shop, Bookworld and Nassau Stationers.
Your continued support is essential in the success of this programme and, with the knowledge that reading is fundamental in providing a solid basis for academic and personal achievement, please encourage your child by showing a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards his/her reading efforts. We encourage you to read along with your children.
Thank you for your help in making this summer a successful reading experience for your child.

Sincerely,
G S McKenzie
Head of English

As looking through Box 4.7 in my textbook, I came to what for me would be the most useful research-based practice is developing reading skills and strategies in children. If a child does not possess any good reading skills, this child will not want to read. Developing these literacy skills will help them to achieve their reading goals. I believe all four of the shared reading strategies are extremely important to use in a classroom for a child’s reading success. As a teacher, I would use all four of them. But if I had to pick one I would introduce, talk about, and read a new story. As our book says, “there is no better way to create a love for books in children of all ages than by reading aloud” (Vecca, Page 127). This will also help them appreciate literature more “and build absolute strong concepts about reading and writing” (Vecca, Page 127). I work in an elementary school; I know how important it is to read aloud to children and on a daily basis. It helps to build their imagination and develop their own ideas and even begin developing their critical thinking skills. I also believe that it gets children involved with the book, especially young children. I believe to develop a love for reading, in turn to benefiting the student in the long run. Asking them before beginning the story, what do you think this story is about? Proceed to ask questions about the story during and after is another way to get them involved in the reading. If they know that questions are coming, this may get them to pay attention during the story more often..…

Prek Reading Strategies By Chris Lopes Oct 28, 2010 Reading is an important skill that you can help your child to develop before they enter kindergarten. You should make sure that your child is familiar with books and with written language. You should help them to recognize individual letters and words, particularly their own name and to begin to link letters and syllables with sounds. The easiest way to help your child to learn how to read is to spend some time reading stories together.…

College students face many challenges; they have to make sure their classwork is done well, and completed in a timely fashion. Many have to find a way to balance school and a career as well as making sure that family obligations and scholastic responsibilities are both met. With all that to deal with the last thing most students want to worry about is carrying around books. Thankfully modern technology has addressed this issue with the E-Reader. An E-Reader will allow people to carry all of the books in their school library as well as personal books and magazines, right in the palm of their hands. There are many types of E-Readers, but two companies lead the field. The first is Amazon with the Kindle. The second is Barnes and Noble with the Nook. Deciding between a Kindle and a Nook can be difficult, but factors like price, features, and specifications can help a person pick which would be best for them.…

Also, teachers can have the summer off which is a plus for people with kids, like myself, so we are able to enjoy quality time with our families. Without advanced technology such as laptops and mobile devices, none of my short or long term goals would be possible. Since education is my field of interest, it is vital that I have a good understanding of the current technological devices and their applications in the classroom. Not only from the perspective of a student, but also a teacher.…

She will also read not only because it is required, but because she has a passion for reading. There have been countless days we spent in the house reading the entire day. Before my daughter began Pre-Kindergarten, I would schedule times to read with her whether after lunch or before bed. As she moved up in her grade levels, we would alternate reading, she would read one page and I would read the next while asking each question such as, “How do you feel about what is happening?” “How do you think the character feels? and “What would you do if you were in this situation?” Parents are a child’s first teacher and I believe my grandmother and mother opened a new world for me by taking me to the library and reading to me. This is what I plan to accomplish with my…
