1984: Is Winston Smith A Hero?
“Ordinary people doing whatever they can to change social systems that do not respect human decency, even with the knowledge that they can’t possibly succeed.” A quote by George Orwell, does the character Winston Smith fulfill this with his acts of rebellion and spontaneous opinions? I think not, because he is not a hero when looking at Orwell’s definition.
Winston Smith is a 39 year-old living in a communistic society in the country of Oceana in the year 1984. He works in the Ministry of Truth where he alters historic documents or newspapers to make Big Brother look as if he is always correct. The most important question is, who is Big Brother? Well Big Brother is a fictional character created by the ruling political party to incite patriotism
