“What Adolescents Miss When we let them grow Up in Cyberspace” written by Brent Staples is a great essay and has many strong points. But I’m going to disagree with this one. The fact that staples has argued that the internet is taking over teenagers social life has offended me and my generation. I differ with his arguments. I believe that the internet has made today’s teenagers more socialize and more connected than ever. Facebook, msn, gmail, twitter etc is a great tool for teenagers to stay in touch and makes it easier for each of them to communicate. The internet is a great tool for teenagers to meet and make new friends around the world. I believe that the internet has made teenagers more attentive than before. Let’s use twitter as an example. Twitter is a social site where you and other people update your status. It is a site where you can check what your friends are doing at the moment. It is a great tool to broadcast news to people (including teenagers who does not read or watch the news) without even turning the TV on or reading a long article from a newspaper. It is a wonderful site to keep each individual updated and informed with each other and around the world.

This is infact false, for it is todays century’s kids who are prevent themselves from becoming more sociable and becoming more involved in outside activities. Stuck online all day, kids don’t even bother to go outside anymore, even less work on things such as their own schoolwork. They have become more dependent on the internet, which will not do them much good when it comes to relying on their capabilities. If kids are allowed to “run wild online,” that is all they will do all day. For that reason many parents limit their online connection because they do not want lazy children who have no goals in their lives and do not want to pursue a valuable career. Parents who truly care about their child and their safety, will allow their children to play sports or participate in other safe activities. It is true that many parents are also very overprotective of their children when it comes to going out, but they would rather have them participate in other activities that isn’t online. Being online all day will not allow them to “explore their identity and the world around them,” it will make them lazy, dependent on the internet, and influence them in the ways society thinks about them, not what they think about themselves. Cyberbullying, for example, had increased as a result of online usage, this problem has led to deaths and other terrible outcomes. Parent’s will help avoid matter as these by preventing children from being absorbed online, that way, the bully can not cyberbully, and the victim can not be cyberbullied.
