I am a big believer in allowance to teach children about money early on. I wish my parents had given us allowance in the way that I learned from a financial course that I took. I don't know if you've ever heard of Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace but I find that he gives very sound financial advice.

He suggests giving children allowance and teaching them how to save, give and spend responsibly. Pay them for certain chores kind of like a wage, give them 3 envelopes... 1/3 goes into each envelope. When they want to purchase something they can only uses what has been allocated to spend.... Even if it means that they cannot afford what they really want, they must choose something they can afford... This is a lesson in not becoming laden with debt and understanding that you can't have what you can't afford. The other big one is the giving.... He argues that your child will understand the value of giving as well as the value of the dollar much more if they are giving their own money IE offering in church or a donation to a cause they wish to support. I am
Now a believer and I think it teaches more responsibility to pay them for certain chores or a set amount a week. I do agree that they also need to understand what it means to be a part of a family and that they are responsible for a part of that as well but I think you can find balance by making certain chores payable and others responsibilities.

“Chores allow children an early and sustained opportunity to experience responsibility. Independence and self-sufficiency in life are tied, ultimately, to mastery of two types of responsibility: personal responsibility and social responsibility” (Rowland, 2000, Brown University Child & Adolescent Behavior Letter, 16(6), 1). Though it can said many times, different ways that chores can help your child it is also said that you should never ask your child to do something that you yourself wouldn’t do and they should be used by busy parents to spend more quality time with their child. The older they get the more and more kids start thanking their parents for the things they do. Now imagine all the good times people have had while with their parents. Would they be the same if they knew their parents were getting paid to do this for them? Some believe that if the children knew the things their parents do for them are because they are getting paid, they wouldn’t have as strong of a bond. Many people that didn’t have much money or wealth growing up always revert back to one thing, family. For some kids, an allowance is something that is expected, just like eating dinner every night or brushing their teeth before bed. For other kids, an allowance is something they have to earn by doing weekly chores. I believe I would make my children earn their allowance, instead of just giving it to them. That way, they will learn the value of hard work, as well as the value of a dollar. They will learn how to budget their money properly, so they know when to save and when to spend. Also, when you teach your child to do chores, they are better prepared for living on their own once they grow up.…
