The opportunity to be a part of the Sophomores-Serve program is one of the most exciting that I have encountered. As someone anticipating a career in medicine I am very interested in integrating science and community service. My academic experience thus far has centered on lectures where it can be hard to take what is being taught and apply it to the outside world. With this program, I believe I will be able to not only learn about something I am interested in, the food environment, but also improve my ability to practically use my knowledge to improve the surrounding world.…

Kevin O'Day, the redheaded dancer so familiar to us from his distinguished tenure with the company of Twyla Tharp (he toiled there eight long years), his duties as soloist with American Ballet Theatre, and his current membership in Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, has made a bravura leap into the tenuous, difficult world of choreography and emerged a winner.(makes me realise that choreography…

For me, the best thing about this third lesson was the interesting content. There was so much to talk about and do. The experiments were fun to watch and brought an amazing amount of student thinking into the lesson. My group was a pleasure to work with. We had great communication before SCMT day and we worked as a team to make sure we each had what we needed as we did our lesson. Too bad we don’t get to have three willing science assistants at our disposal when we are teaching science for real! I felt that my group members were able to predict the moves the kids might make based off our lesson plan. This a change from our first SCMT lesson. I can see how our SCMT lesson experiences have connected us with how students and teachers interact with in the five E lesson format. Our experience and knowledge from class helped us to…

Student council is a curricular or extra-curricular activity for students within grade schools around the world. Present in most public and private K-12 school systems across the United States, Canada and Australia these bodies are alternatively entitled student council, student government, Associated Student Body, Student Activity Council, Student Council Association or S.C.A. Student councils often serve to engage students in learning about democracy and leadership, as originally espoused by John Dewey in Democracy and Education (1917). The first democratically elected student council in the United States was established at the Loomis Chaffee school in Windsor, CT. This curricular activity has been around since the 1920's.…
