Specific Heat Summative
STAGE 1 PHYSICS
ASSESSMENT TYPE 1: INVESTIGATIONS FOLIO
PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION 2: SPECIFIC HEAT

PURPOSE

This assessment provides the student with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to: formulate hypotheses and identify variables conduct an investigation collect, analyse and interpret data, and form conclusions evaluate results communicate your understanding of the physics concepts relating to the speed of sound in air

DESCRIPTION OF ASSESSMENT
Students will measure the energy given out by a Bunsen burner over a two minute period by measuring the temperature change within varying masses of water.

ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS
The practical is to be completed under supervision in a double lesson.
The students will write a thoroughly detailed experimental report where all variables and experimental procedures will be discussed in detail. Results are to be communicated in table and graph form with a thorough analysis of the experimental procedure and results to follow.
Manipulation of apparatus, safety, (Investigation) and skills in individual and collaborative work are assessed during the implementation of the investigation.
Students will have two days after completing the experiment to formally write up their experimental report for submission

YEAR 11 PHYSICS: SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY Name: Changyu Liu
BACKGROUND
If heat transfers to an object, the object’s temperature rises (assuming the phase doesn’t change). However, the magnitude of temperature rise is due to its specific heat capacity. Specific heat capacity is the thermal energy required to raise the temperature of a body of mass 1 kg by 10C. This relationship can be expressed in an equation: Q=mc∆T. Water is a substance with a specific heat capacity of 4.186 joule/gram °C and is capable of storing energy between molecules. In this experiment, the energy change within a mass of water can be determined and this value can be used to determine the

The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of an object exactly 1°C is the heat capacity of that object. The specific heat capacity of a substance is then the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1g of the substance1°C. Caliometry is the precise measurement of the heat flow into or out of a system for chemical and physical processes. Heat flow is measured in two common units, the calorie and the Joule. 1 calorie= 1 kilocalorie = 1000 calories. A calorimeter is the device used to measure the absorption or release of heat. In this lab, the water in aluminum can “calorimeter” gains the heat lost during the combustion of a Cheeto.…

Using the temperature change we can calculate how much thermal energy was transferred into the water. The change in temperature was a difference of 14’C, from 26’C to 40’C. Therefore to rise 1mL of water by 14’C you need 58.16J.…

Introduction – This section should include an overview of why the experiment was conducted. It should first contain background information of similar studies that have already been done in the area. This is accomplished by citing existing literature from similar experiments along with explaining their results. Secondly, it should provide an objective or a reason why the experiment is being done. Why do we want to know the answer to the question we are asking? Finally, it should end with a hypothesis. You should pose a question and predict the answer to the question that will be investigated. This hypothesis should be made prior to your experiment and should not be adjusted to reflect the “right”…

Abstract: The purpose of this experiment is to study the energy changes associated with the phase changes of water. In this experiment we know the water is gaining energy so we know the heat is going to be positive and we can use the equation MCΔT to find the energy change. The specific heat will be 1 and we just have to measure the water to find the mass and take the temperature before and after we start to find the energy change.…
