Describe the effects of the different levels of ECB infestations. Were all corn varieties equally effective at controlling the ECB? How do you know?
They all reduced the amount of kernels in the yield. All of the varieties were not equally effective, because the average yield was different every time.

2. If there was no ECB infestation in a certain year, would a farmer gain or lose financially by planting Bt corn? Explain why.
Then one of the 2 bt varieties (bt 123) would not give a good yield, but the other bt variety would give a really good yield.

3. If there was ECB infestation in a certain year, would a farmer gain or lose financially by planting Bt corn? Explain why.
It would depend on the level of ECB infestation. Both levels would lose but if the level of ECB infestation was high, a farmer would lose a lot more that if it was low.

4. What might happen if ECB became resistant to Bt?
Then over many generations there will be more survivors, and the survivors will be highly resistant to

Discuss possible benefits and drawbacks of a transgenic organism such as Bt corn.
Benefits:
1. Whomever is growing the corn would not have to pay for pesticides.
2. The yield would increase.
3. A farmer would be in a better financial position.
Drawbacks:
1. The pest insects would, over time become resistant to it; causing more problems to the corn, so the yield would

In this scenario, George has a tough decision to make. I think George should continue to look for another corn supplier that sells quality corn at a reasonable rate. George can also find out who supplys their competitior Abco Snack Food corn and try to get the corn for the same price. George can ship the grain outside the United States to make a profit, but I believe that is a wrong choice. George knows the corn is contaminated so he should not sell the corn to anyone even if it is legal to ship the grain internationally. Hurting others for self gain or advancement is immoral. I understand that George is trying to make something happen so that the employees will not get laid off, but George has to think about the people the corn may affect…

Tom Simmons, Marketing Manager for Green Acres Seed Company, is trying to make a strategy for increasing the company’s sale and profit even though province of Ontario has a highly competitive seed corn market. By setting a promising marketing strategy, the company could take over small part of market share from leading company, and this would result that Green Acre could get high reputation and awareness in Ontario as well as in Canada. Currently, seed leading company is Pioneer that has more than 50 percent of the market, and Green Acre has about 11 percent. When we read the background paragraph, there are two types of corn: grain corn and silage corn. Grain corn is harvested only the ear and used for commercial purpose. On the other hands, silage corn is harvested the entire plant and used for feeding livestock. Especially, leading company and 2nd and 3rd company are focusing on grain corn, because this product can be converted into commercial product, and this would make more profit than silage corn. For Green Acre’s position of grain corn product, it is very hard to penetrate and take market share in the grain corn product area. Thus, it is proposed that Tom Simmons, Marketing Manager for the company came up with solution by targeting silage producer with hybrids having high silage performance attributes, and average price of six varieties is . There are three reasons for choosing this strategy. First, market leader in Ontario is vague. Second, the silage strategy make the company differentiate from competitors. Third, Green Acre has better silage performance characteristic than competitors. In order to catch some useful information from 400 farmers they did market research.…

Corn production has gone up due to the help of ammonia fertilizer. Corn farms do not practice organic agriculture. Crop yield has gone up four times compared to Ian and Curt’s ancestors in the early 1900’s with the help of fertilizers and herbicides to kill the weeds. The government subsidizes large farms to plant on more land and to buy out their neighbors if they do not want to grow crops. Farmers get rewarded for overproduction of cheap corn which keeps the production of corn going on full blast. Majority of the corn produced gets fed to animals or us in the form of high fructose corn syrup which is empty calories. Due to consolidation of family farms into large farming operations, the consumers are harmed while the cooperation benefit because they get cheap corn produced in surplus to turn into high fructose corn syrup or feed to sell to livestock producers. Consumers are harmed because more high fructose corn syrup is being produced and put into the foods we consume on a daily basis. Corn is in everything that we consume, such as sodas and hamburgers. High fructose corn syrup has adverse effects such as a higher risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes and obesity. The table sugar consumption has decreased, but high fructose corn syrup consumption has increased by 30% because it is cheaper to buy and produce. In the late 1980’s high fructose corn syrup has taken over half of the sweetener…

This experiment was conducted for a 140 day growing season in a controlled environment. The corn was planted and was then infested by a given amount of ECB. The first group tested was the golden corn. Three groups of golden corn were infested by three varying amounts of ECB. Group A was effected by no ECB, group B was infested by a low level of ECB and group C was infested by a high concentration of ECB. At the end of the growing season the stalks of corn were then inspected and measured for yield. Corn crop yield is measured by the…

Being a multinational supplier of genetically modified seeds, Monsanto posses severe economic impacts in the international marketplace. Originally, the Bt Cotton seeds should have produced positive externalities upon the Indian economy, however, the enforcement of the biological patent disables the economy from reaching the potential positive effects. Initially, the purpose of the genetically modified cotton seeds were to substantially increase the production of cotton. Higher crop yields would have resulted in cheaper prices for consumerism, as economies of scale would have taken effect. However, as the revenue generated by farmers cannot cover variable costs, a shut down point will be reached within the industry. Farming revenue is irregular…

The over use of corn can affect us as well. Fuel has run out, and corn will too. Sure, we can plant the in our many acres of land but that does not change the fact that we are going to be depending on the weather. Livestock and poultry producers fear that there may not be enough corn to produce meat, milk and eggs. And according to Lester Brown, since the United States supplies 70% of world corn exports, corn-importing countries are worried about their supply as well. The is a line between food and energy sectors, and since almost everything we eat can be converted into fuel for automobiles; (including wheat, corn, rice, soybeans and sugarcane) that line is starting to disappear.…

The majority of corn grown within this country is inedible until processing; also, previously stripped of most of its nutrients, due to the genetic engineering that allows the corn in denser populations. Compared to a couple generations ago, farmers would marvel over 40 bushels an acre; today’s generation is procuring 180 bushels from that same acre, producing roughly 5 tons of food. The corn is then processed into animal feed,…

Others claim that there has not been enough research on the GM crops to suggest that they are either good or bad for the environment. Hilbeck’s research on the effect of GM corn crops on European Corn Bores (ECB) is one example of the research done on GM products. For crops other than GM corn, not enough research has been done. In order to assure that the environment and human population is safe, research should be done to regulate the GM products produced.…
