1. Under what conditions does 02 consumption provide a good estimate of the metabolic rate? Under Aerobic conditions.
2. What factors should be considered when the metabolic rate measured is to be a reliable measure of the basal metabolic rate? The animal must be resting. The animal must be in its thermoneutral zone. The animal must be fasting in order to avoid the calorigenic effect of food.
3. What is allometry and what type of information does it provide? Allometry is the scaling coefficient of processes within the body.
4. How does the metabolic rate vary with body mass? The larger the animal, the higher the metabolic rate. Since larger animals have more cells, larger animals require more oxygen, leading to higher metabolic rate.
5. How does the mass specific metabolic rate vary with body mass? It decreases as mass of animal increases.
6. What are some commonly observed values of the allometry coefficient? Multiples of 0.25, such as 0.75 for metabolic rate, 0.25 for lifespan, and 1.25 for cerebral gray matter.
7. What is the respiratory quotient and what is the range of values observed? The ratio of CO2 expired to 02. Range of values is 0-250 ml 02/hr.
8. Now that non linear curve fitting methods can be easily accomplished by using standard personal computers, is there any compelling reason to transform equations so as to linearize the trends above? It helps because it smooths out the data instead of being all squished together.

    Maximal oxygen consumption (VO₂max) is an excellent indicator of a person’s physical fitness level. It can also be used for many other things including diagnostic tools for physicians. In this study, two different methods of collecting maximal oxygen uptake scores were compared. The first being the predicted VO₂max score attained via the Rockport test and the second being indirect calorimetry VO₂max score attained through cycle ergometer and an attached metabolic cart. Ten males and nine females of similar ages participated in both the Rockport and Indirect Calorimetry tests. It was found that the Rockport predicted tests significantly overestimated the VO₂max scores for males by 14% and females by 16% possibly due to the variability the test is subjected to. The Indirect Calorimetry was therefore deemed the more accurate test. It was also discovered that there were significant individual differences in the data due to many differing factors, including sex, body composition, heredity and physical prowess.…

    1. The Respiratory exchange ratio is the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide produced and oxygen consumed. The ratio indicates the energy that the subject is expending for indirect calorimetry, how efficient the subject 's body is at utilizing the oxygen inhaled, as well as the main substrate being used for energy during varying intensities of exercise. During rest the volume of carbon dioxide was 0.73L/min, the volume of oxygen was 0.84L/min. The RQ or RER was 0.87. The ratio indicates that roughly 68% of the kcal that the subject was using came from carbohydrates and the remaining 32% of the kcal came from fat. During the 50W stage the volume of carbon dioxide was 2.2L/min and the volume of oxygen was 2.9L/min. The RQ was 0.79, which indicates that the 33% of the kcal that the subject was using came from carbohydrates and that 67% of the kcal came from fat. In the 100W stage the volume of carbon dioxide was 4.08L/min and the volume of oxygen consumed was 4.1L/min. The RQ came out o be 0.99, the substrate being used was only carbohydrates at this point. The 200w stage had a carbon dioxide volume of 7.91L/min and a oxygen consumed volume of 6.51L/min. The RQ was 1.2 which indicates that the body is producing more carbon dioxide than the oxygen being consumed. The substrate being used for energy again is only carbohydrates.…
