Chapter 1 Goods, Services, and Operations Management

re you ready for college?” Paul asked Andrea as he helped her pack up the car. “Sure! I’m really glad I chose State
University. Summer orientation was fantastic! The tour guide gave us so much information I felt like I had been there a year already; we even had a free lunch. When we got to the Admissions Center, I met with a counselor who walked me through everything – on-line class registration, bill payment, financial aid, getting my ID, and purchasing a parking pass. He even printed out my schedule with a map that shows where each class will be. I was through in about an hour. He even gave me some ideas about campus organizations to join to meet more people in my college and a list of helpful on-line sites. How about you?” “Yeah, I can’t wait,” Paul replied.
But he was really thinking “Why didn’t I select State U? During my freshman orientation, I had to wait in a long line to get my classes scheduled, and then go across campus to wait in another line for financial aid, to another office to pay my tuition bill, and then to another building for my parking pass. When I had a question, they simply told me they couldn’t answer it and I had to go see somebody else. I hope I don’t have to go

Supply chain management is the coordination of the processes and functions within a business, adopted by most companies in the UK in the late 1990’s. It deals with the internal and external factors that, when dealt with correctly and systematically, can determine a businesses success or failure. A supply chain is the network of activities that delivers a finished product service to the customer. By definition, supply chain management (SCM) is “the management of the flows of materials from suppliers to customers in order to reduce overall cost and increase responsiveness to the customers” (Reid & Sanders). SCM entails the co-ordination of the movement of good through the supply chain from suppliers to manufacturers to distributors to the final customer. The main aim of SCM is to maximise the efficiency of any given process being carried out by a company; by doing this it is allowing them to try to cut their costs and hopefully keep satisfying their customers’ needs, while at the same time maintaining their competitive position within their market. Supply chain management is seen as more of an “open system” in contrast to the traditional system used by the majority of companies just 20 years ago. The new “open system” allows room for change which is greatly needed with the current financial instability of the economy.…

When the news of my acceptance to the University of South Florida first got to me I was ecstatic. I relished at the thought of becoming a college student and its power of endless possibilities. Unfortunately, this short lived glorious moment changed when I discovered I was pregnant during my sophomore year. At the time my apartment complex, Campus Lodge, offered a $500 gift card for lease renewals. A trip to the abortion clinic seemed to be a conspicuous choice. After receiving my gift card, however, all I could do was stare at…

I’ve only just recently began a new college experience after being out of school for many years. I am in the early formation of meeting new people and establishing relationships with teachers and advisors. I have found it very helpful to become involved in group and individual student discussions and looking into joining college social clubs with mutual interests. My professors and advisors are very helpful and will remain that way as long as I take it upon myself to establish and to maintain ongoing communication with them. Things such as visiting…

The current high school that I’m attending is teachers preparatory. The deans, Ms. Wilson, Mr. Otto and Mr.Gansrow allowed me to participate in this year college tour. Our bus trip to the first college is Binghamton University. All I can think about is this can turn into reality, that one day I would be taking this three hour bus ride to my first day of college. But when we arrived, I suddenly went into shock mode due to the abundance of land and space occupied for one section of this university. Entering the admissions office a junior at the university named Amanda Wison was our tour guidance for the day. One thing this college did that no other college did was take down our information so we can stay updated on how the university is doing. During this tour Ms.Wison showed us numerous areas for dining and socializing. I personally liked the idea of different types of foods because I’m a very picky eater. Another area she showed and explained to us was the libraries in the school, which are located on about every floor in every section of the university. I also personally like this because it not only supplies you with research and sources but it’s another area in the college to get away from noise and to concentrate. Lastly the dorm rooms are amazing. I personally like the suite because it has more space , but the corridors set wasn’t bad it was just small but the best thing about them is that their bathrooms gets cleaned every day and the suites gets cleaned every three days.…

I close the front door, kick off my shoes, and throw my bag down. Rummaging through the mail after multiple bills and shopping adds we never look at, I finally got it. This is the moment I have been yearning for since I was 12 years old, my letter from NYU. This will either make all my dreams come true, or have them all explode right in front of me. I sheepishly open the letter, not wanting to rip anything. I read it out loud, “Dear Dakota, we are pleased to announce that you have been accepted into NYU.”…

A conventional “bricks and mortar” grocery does not have an online presence, only a physical one. It is built on a face-to-face customer service, and usually always has a building for their operations. A “brick and mortar” grocery has advantages and disadvantages compared to an online operation, like Theorganicgrocer.com. First of all, their major disadvantage is the overhead. The cost of property, insurance, taxes and staff is much higher for a “brick and mortar” operation than an online operation. The biggest advantage for a “brick and mortar” operation is customer security. To a customer, if a company has physical presence, it is seen as more reliable as the company is far less likely to fold overnight and disappear.…
