Interactive Session: People Monitoring Employees on Networks – Unethical or Good Business?
1. Should managers monitor employees e-mail and Internet usage? Why or why not?
I personally think that monitoring employee’s e-mail(s) and Internet usage is good because it will make employees to work more productively, in other words reduce time wasting. If employees know that they are being watched they may fear of being caught wasting time through Web usage. Monitoring employee’s e-mails and Web usage may seem little unethical but it will definitely make a better business due to employees being more productive. As well employers can catch employee’s racist e-mails, boss cursing e-mails, and complaints about their company, from knowing all of these situations a company can help the working environment to become more efficient and healthy.
2. Describe an effective e-mail and Web use policy for a company.
I think e-mail and Web use policy may differ greatly on the way you see. If you think as an employer you will proabably want to monitor employee’s Web behviro. However, employees probably don’t like being watched. Therefore, I thought satisfying both employer and employees could be an effective e-mail and Web use policy. The new policy provides employees to a specific amount of free Web usage time such as 20minutes per day. However, e-mail policy should depend whether a company will make strict rules of freer atmosphere for employees, and I think it will be difficult to make an effective e-mail usage policy because if employees figure out that employers are reading your e-mails they will stop expressing their emotions or send personal information to other people through e-mails.
3. Should managers inform employees that their Web behavior is monitored? Or should managers monitor secretly? Why or why not?
I think managers should not inform employees that their Web behavior is monitored, because if an employer doesn’t tell employees that they are

    I believe that e-mail usage with an organization is beneficial to all parties within an organization. Its main purpose is for communications between employees, management, and clients. It is a tool used from a PC to a PC or MAC which is sent and received in seconds, As far as the downside of e-mail usage can be the information being sent and received and the privacy issues. Organizations fear that that the information being sent and or received can lead to a lawsuit or cause adverse publicity for that organization, which could be costly to an organization. This is one of the main reasons organizations limit the usages of e-mails. The path once an e-mail leaves an organization is a very broad one, it goes through an IP address from sender to an IP address to the receiver (or what we call the internet). And the receiver can then take the information sent to them and resend it others without the permission or even knowledge of who in turn will receive it and what they will do with it.     Companies have increased productivity, decreased costs and found new marketing methods using email to attract new customers and keep previous ones up to date on product changes, information sales etc. This helps a work group to communicate to each other affectively and easily keeping all party’s up to date. The advantages of email in business can be seen in small and large organizations. Due to the fast speed of the Internet this allows businesses to work at a faster pace and communicate more effectively. Decreased cost and speed is some of the business advantages of using email. There is a cost savings as well because of employees may receive an email message that was infected with a virus and when it is opened it then spreads to the computer and then to the network that infects all the other workstations. Some of these email viruses also send messages back out by using your contact/address book. This costs the company as they try and control the virus and ensure none of the other workstations get infected. An emails path, after it leaves an organization, is usually meant to go to a certain person or persons, but can end up spread throughout the internet by hackers. This is non-encrypted text that is routed from your organization back to their Internet provider through routers and hubs that typically routes to other internet providers and back to the person or persons. Since there are so many locations a hacker can capture your open email message and use it wrongly.…

    The idea of employee rights involves many complex issues. An employee’s right to a workplace free of discrimination and harmful environmental factors is obvious. Yet, other issues surrounding privacy, personal expression, and communication monitoring are not as clear-cut. While employees may feel that they have the right to express their opinions and use business communications while working, not only may they be fooling themselves but they are acting in a way that is unethical.
