Advertising media
Of the many advertising channels used by Levi’s, like TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, we chose the “magazine print channel” because we think that the magazine ad is pure, that anyone can just take a look and immediately understand the meaning of the advertisement. In this project, we select the Curve ID series ads in USA, Taiwan and China.

The government had the power to ration materials and dictate what companies could make. This narrowed the variety of fashion significantly. People also lacked money due to the Great Depression in the 1930s, so it was difficult to buy fancy clothes. Even though women limited their spending on clothing, fashion was still a prominent aspect of being a woman in the 1940s. During this time, “utility” dresses, plain dresses with natural waistline and an A line skirt, became very popular. Women wore these dresses anywhere: for errands, going to the movies, and other daily activities. The “utility” dress acknowledged that women had more responsibilities and greater importance in society. In fact, women started to have more choices in fashion as seen by the acceptance of slacks on women. Up until the 1940s women were discouraged from wearing pants because it was seen as unfeminine. Because of the rationed materials in the country, corsets for women were discouraged. Not only did women gain freedom in society by wearing pants and no corsets, but they also gained physical freedom. Women were no longer constrained by tight undergarments or by having to be modest and careful with their skirts. However, when the men returned after the war and during the 1950s, women’s fashion changed to a dramatic, feminine…

Jeans are trousers, a sort of piece of clothing, regularly produced using denim or dungaree fabric. Regularly the expression "pants" alludes to a specific style of jeans, called "Levis," which were designed by Jacob W. Davis in association with Levi Strauss and Co. in 1871[1] and protected by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss on May 20, 1873. Preceding the Levi Strauss licensed trousers, the expression "pants" had been long being used for different pieces of clothing (counting trousers, overalls, and coats), developed from blue hued denim.[2] Originally intended for ranchers and mineworkers, pants got to be prominent in the 1950s among youngsters, particularly individuals from the greaser subculture. Pants were a typical design thing in the 1960s Hippie subculture and they kept on being mainstream in the 1970s and 1980s youth subcultures of punk rock and substantial metal. Notable brands incorporate Levi's, Lee, and Wrangler. In the 2010s, pants remain a well-known form thing, and they come in different fits, including thin, decreased, thin, straight, boot cut, cigarette base, restricted base, chime base, low waist, hostile to fit, and flare. "Upset" (obviously matured and worn, yet at the same time in place and practical) pants trousers…

Many women believe Mary Kay Ashe said it best when she observed, “While clothes may not make the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self-confidence — which, I believe, does make the woman.” (educators.fidm.com). This observation simply means that a woman’s appearance can have a tremendous influence on how she really views herself. Two advertisements from the world famous Levi’s Jean Company portrays this concept of self. One advertisement from a Seventeen magazine published in 1954 presents four women standing in a posed position, showcasing various types of Levi clothing attire. Another advertisement, published fifty years later, in 2009 in the W+K magazine presents a different view by drawing the viewers attention to only one woman, who is only clothed waist down with a pair of Levi jeans. The advertisements show a vast cultural change by the way the two photographic meanings are displayed in the various images. The two advertisements demonstrate a change in a woman’s perception of self through the change in the stages of rebellion, confidence, and most importantly independence in women, which are each brought about in the advertisements. This cultural change is evident in the different slogans of the ads, overall various images of the women, the angle of the shots, the use of technology, the color scheme and layout of the two advertisements.…
