Lecture: What do I expect of your paragraphing?
My expectations:
1) Paragraphs are 7-15 sentences in length.
2) Paragraphs have some sort of internal organizational structure. 3) Paragraphs use strong topic sentences that never include quotations. 4) The concluding sentence is optional.
5) You should have at least two main points and no more than four in order to limit the length of the paragraph.
The basic paragraph structure you may use in college writing. This is the level of clarity and structure that I expect:
(TS) The Topic Sentence controls the central idea of the paragraph (MP) The Main Point makes an original observation about the text(s) and is relevant to the TS (SS) The Supporting Sentence integrates a quotation relevant to the main point above. (ES) The Elaborating Sentence comments on the quotation directly above (MP) The Main Point makes an original observation about the text(s) and is relevant to the TS (SS) The Supporting sentence integrates a quotation relevant to the main point above (ES) The Elaborating Sentence comments on the quotation directly above (MP) The Main Point makes an original observation about the text(s) and is relevant to the TS (SS) The Supporting Sentence integrates a quotation relevant to the main point above (ES) The Elaborating Sentence comments on the quotation directly above (CS) The concluding sentence should be more of a transition to the next paragraph. It is optional. In most cases you can use an introductory element at the start of the next paragraph instead. Advanced Paragraphing:

You are welcome to use the variety of paragraph organizational templates that are available in the lengthy instructional handout in this module. Please take the time to examine them. The very best essay writing uses a variety of paragraph styles to create interest.
