Course Number: 76979
Units: 5 units: 4 lecture hours, 3 lab hours per week
Time & Location: Lectures: MCL 121 MWF, 2:00 – 3:05 p.m.

Course Description: (Not open to students with credit in Biology 33; college level chemistry and human anatomy recommended.) The emphasis of this course is on homeostasis in the human body; how organ systems function to maintain life; dynamic and adaptive systems at the molecular, cellular, and organ level; the physiologic interrelationship between human systems and the correlation between structure and function of each system will be studied at several levels: cellular, tissue, organ, systemic, and whole body. Primarily for students majoring in health-related professions, this course is a prerequisite for the Nursing and Physical Therapy programs, satisfies a major requirement for those students majoring in Kinesiology or Public Health, and satisfies other major requirements for Biology majors. It is taught in a traditional lecture and laboratory format in combination with additional online content; lectures will utilize Powerpoint and a variety of multimedia presentations. Laboratory will be largely hands-on and team-based, utilizing a variety of resources including Powerpoint, multimedia, prepared microscope slides, models, and human and animal specimens. This course requires an excellent grasp of the English language, the discipline to commit many facts to memory, and a great deal of study time. A minimum of 10 hours per week study time outside of lecture and lab is critical to passing this course. The laboratory component of this course,

    Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant environment in response to internal and external stimuli. The body requires the constant and healthy environment that only homeostasis can provide Without this environment the body wouldn’t be able to carry out the life support process. An example of a normal disruption in homeostasis would be if one were to raise the temperature. The body would respond by ejecting and liquid from your body, called sweat. Sweating is meant to cool down the body. Another example of a normal disruption of homeostasis would be if say, one were to be out side playing for hours.
