Different Types of Bacon
BACON

Bacon is defined as any certain cuts of meat taken from the sides, belly or back of a pig that may be cured and/or smoked. Meat from other animals may also be used or otherwise prepared to resemble bacon, such as chicken or turkey bacon. Bacon may be eaten fried, baked or grilled. It is commonly used in sandwiches.

A side of unsliced bacon is flitch or slab bacon, while an individual slice of bacon is a rasher or simply a slice or strip. Slices of bacon are also known as collops. Traditionally, the skin is left on the cut and is known as “bacon rind”. Rind less bacon, however, is quite common.

Bacon joints include the following: -

➢ Collar bacon is taken from the back of a pig near the head. ➢ Hock, from the hog ankle joint between the ham and the foot. ➢ Gammon, from the hind leg. ➢ Picnic bacon is from the picnic cut, which includes the shoulder beneath the blade.

Rashers or slices differ depending where they are cut from: -

➢ Steaky bacon comes from the belly of a pig. It is very fatty with long veins of fat running parallel to the rind. ➢ Black bacon comes from the loin in the middle of the back of the pig. It is a lean meaty cut of bacon with relatively less fat compared to other cuts and has ham like texture and flavor. ➢ Middle bacon is much like black bacon but is cheaper and somewhat fattier with a rich flavor. ➢ Cottage bacon is thinly sliced lean pork meat from a shoulder cut that is typically oval shaped and meaty. It is cured and then sliced into round pieces for baking or frying. ➢ Jowl bacon is cured and smoked cheeks of

Ear notching is an essential part of identification for pigs. Some people use ear tags, and that might be the method you’re used too, however there are actually many cons to this method. Ear tags can get dirty so you can’t see them unless you wipe them off, which is very difficult to do when they get older and more ornery. Also, they could get ripped off or broken, which defeats the purpose of identification all together. Ear notches will never go away, as they heal as if they were born with them. You ear notch according to their litter number and pig number. The litter number correlates to the number litter it is within six months. The pig number correlates to the number pig in the litter. This number doesn’t matter which pig you pick, just whatever pig you pig you pick up first. The left ear, when you are looking at the pig, is the litter number. The right ear is the pig number. The pigs ears are divided into “zones”, by multiples of 3’s. It starts at…

In 1676 in Virginia, governor William Berkeley was under a lot of pressure, the colonist believed that Berkeley was protecting the Natives. Berkeley feared the poor colonist would go against him; he increased taxes, revoked their right to vote which made it impossible for anyone to be included into Berkeley’s inner circle. This was only the beginning of what is soon to be a disaster.…

Driving your car to a dinner with friends you go by hundreds of advertisement slogans at the side of the road. Reading them seems to be a good way to entertain your mind with all those miles ahead and since you didn't decide what are you going to order yet you think that maybe some of them will give you an idea. One of them captures your attention in a special way, it shows the image of a laughing sheep and below it says: “Meat is real food”. Eureka! Now you have a guess of what your order will be, but as long as you keep thinking in this phrase you wonder what they meant with the word “real”. If they are stating such a thing it means that they also believe that there is other food that is not real or not as real as meat. A second thought crosses your mind when you remember a column you read in the newspaper a few days ago which was titled as followed: “Studies have found that the consumption of meat and animal products increase the development of chronic diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary heart disease, obesity, kidney failure, osteoporosis and cancer”.…

It is brutal and immoral to kill animals for food while there is a plenty of rich nutritional non-animal food. All animals are warm-blooded beings that have emotion and feeling therefore, they can experience fear, shock, and pain. Animal slaughter is a significant issue. “In the United States about 35 million cows, 115 million pigs, and 9 billion birds are killed for food each year” (Procon.org). How can so many people want to kill animals just because of their tasty meat? For example, bacon is one of the most common foods that every household has in their refrigerator. They usually have a crispy bacons plate for their dinner, and nobody can deny its delectable taste. But how many people actually know where the bacon comes from? First, the pigs will be delivered to the…

One reason for this problem was that there was no real inspection of the meat. A quote from "The Jungle" tells of a government inspector checking the hogs for Tuberculosis, "This government inspector did not have a manner of a man who was worked to death; he was apparently not haunted by a fear that the hog might get by before he had finished his testing. If you were a sociable person, he was quite willing to enter into conversation with you and to explain the deadly nature of the ptomaines which are found in tubercular pork; and while he was talking with you you could hardly be so ungrateful to notice that a dozen…

If a cynic were asked why the world was created they might say it was so the goddamn car could break down in this small, Texas town with a clapboard sign of a pig taking a bite out of a ham hock; hell, they might claim Texas itself is a cosmic joke to turn urban sophisticates selfless, stuck five-hundred miles from the real world for eternity. For the cynic, any sort of hell would suffice, I suppose, as long as it was properly unpleasant, not some shadowy, un-signified underworld. That shit doesn’t fly in Texas. No Hades or anything found in a textbook. And no loud wailing or self-pity. You take your punishment like your own signature pitched you off the world. On the cracked television in the repair shop were more commercials where animals can’t help but plead to be eaten. They are noble examples. Helping after helping they confirm their texture, their flavor, until I become queasy that there may be some slipped logic in myself that dream-world uneasiness where the signature turns to consume its signatory and I start to suspect this waiting room is hell— the vending machine of red-hots, the old World News and Reports washed out by the Texas sun, the smell of fresh tires, the landscape itself, twisted and alien, almost too unreal to be a temporary stop, too unreal to be a place where they just let you sign…

    Bacon's for Idols

Francis Bacon is widely regarded as the father of empiricism. Bacon is credited for making many scientific discoveries, most notably the scientific method. He also provides us with a new tool for reasoning through The New Organon. He gives us a set of idols that he feels need to be set aside in order to discover new truths. Idols are falsely worshipped ideas that can fill our minds with incorrect thoughts. They are predispositions that create both prejudices and misconceptions. Bacon states that there are four idols that we must eliminate in order to be able to make clear decisions. The four idols are idols of: the tribe, the cave, the marketplace, and the theater.…

Guinea Pigs are not in fact as the name suggests, pigs, they are members of the rodent family more specifically hystricomorphic rodents, related to porcupines and chinchillas. Guinea Pigs or Cavia Porcellus originated in the South American Andes and it is suggested that they are the domesticated descendants of closely related Cavy, Cavia apera, Cavia fulgidia and Cavia Tschudii. Wild guinea pigs tend to be smaller in statue than their domesticated cousin, generally though they have short round legs, are low to the ground and very agile, these are animals which have a vast array of colour, textures and patterns to their coats (www.bioweb.uwlax.edu)…
