3. Paragraph
Stilton cheese rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2000 residents of the English village of
Stilton – famous for its pungent blue cheese – must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dresssed in a variety of bizarre

costumes, roll a complete cheese along a 50 metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, orgo into their opponents’ lane. Competition is intense and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden replicas). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.

The suspect’s alibi was stated that he arrived home at approximately 10:00 and then had a telephone conversation until 10:20; his location previous to his arrival time was at a friend’s house who agrees with this statement. His alibi can be proven untruthful with the given evidence. Eye witnesses at the crime scene had seen the suspect in his vehicle at approximately 10:15 (during the crime). Investigators realized that it would take one 30 minutes to travel from the crime scene to the suspects home. When investigators arrived at his house at approximately 11:00 they took temperature readings of his engine and then additional temperature readings 10 minutes later. The initial temperature reading was at 150 and the second was at 130, usual running temperature for this vehicle is at 200. Through mathematics we found that the if the suspects alibi was true the vehicles temperature should have been at 93 not 150 when investigators arrived there. Through additional mathematics the vehicle was found to be stopped running about 17 minutes before…

The families who are in the parade have set up booths to represent either the vineyards and or their farms. There are many of the same items at the booths, but each family has their own processes and ingredients. Not all parmesan cheeses are the same, they each have their own distinct texture and flavor. The families also have on display different varieties of honey, olives and their freshly baked breads. If you were not hungry when you arrived, the smells from the market makes you want a sample from each booth. The cheeses vary from Parmesan to buffalo mozzarella, which is one of my favorite cheeses. The sweet yet salty flavor and smooth texture mixed with Roma tomatoes, basil and little bit of olive oil on bread makes my mouth water! I tried Parmesan cheese dipped it in a thick grainy honey for the first time. It was amazing! The flavor of both the honey and the cheese come together in a bold dance in your mouth. My husband’s favorite booths were any that had wine samples. Well, it was a grape festival after all. We must have sampled at least a whole bottle of wine and bought three or four bottles to take home. They would hand you a sample of wine and particular meat or cheese that paired with that wine. My mouth tingled with excitement from all the flavors that the pairing brought…

The story involves four characters who live in a maze: the mice Scurry and Sniff, and two 'little people', Hem and Haw. All is going well because they have found a huge source of their favorite food, cheese. Hem and Haw have even moved their houses to be near it and it has becomes the center of their lives. But they do not notice that it is getting smaller, and are devastated when they arrive at the site one morning and find the cheese is gone. The mice, Sniff and Scurry possessed simple rodent brains but good instincts searched for the hard nibbling cheese they liked. In contrast, the two little people Hem and Haw, used brains filled with many believes and emotions to search for a different kind of cheese which they believed would make them feel happy and successful. This is where the story splits in two. Scurry and Sniff quickly accept the loss of the cheese and go off into the maze in search of other sources. The little people, because they have built their lives around the big cheese, feel they are the victim of some kind of fraud or theft. Yet this only makes things worse, as their clinging on ensures that they go hungry. Meanwhile, the mice move on and find new cheese.…

The poem Feliks Skrzynecki addresses several profound values and assumptions associated with immigration and belonging. One particularly striking value is the growing disparity between father and son – Feliks Skrzynecki and the poet, Peter Skrzynecki – and the concerns regarding their relationship. Throughout the poem, Peter, speaking from personal experiences, speaks for both his own and his father’s sense of self and belonging, specifically contrasting their different perspectives. Feliks loves his Polish culture, and will probably never change passions towards his environment - Australia: “kept pace only with the Joneses/ of his own mind’s making.” We later develop an understanding of his “mind’s making” in the next line: “Loved his garden like an only child.” This garden is a reflection of his past culture; the simile further highlight’s Feliks’ sense of belonging for this culture. Also, the particular diction “only child” stresses Feliks’ connection with his garden as opposed to his connection with Peter, who was Feliks’ one (adopted) son. Peter, instead of sharing his father’s view of polish customs, he feels excluded and could never relate to his father’s polish culture and friends: “His Polish friends/ always shook hands too violently... That formal address/ I never got used to.” Part of this could have come from the fact that he had grown up in Australia, away from the “farms where paddocks flowered / with corn and wheat...” (Poland) – The place where his father had grown up. Perhaps the phrase “Happy as I have never been” is the final turning point between Peter and Feliks. This phrase ultimately emphasises the distinction between Peter and Feliks, in which, ironically, one had led a harsh life full of work in the old traditional culture, whilst the other was far more fortunate in the new Australian society.…

    Cornpone

Mark Twain’s essay “Corn-Pone Opinions” was all about how people in society follow trends, even when they do not like them. In the beginning of the essay Twain talks about being fifteen and how he loved to hear this black man’s sermons. His mother forbids him to listen to these sermons because the black man was a slave. He then goes on to talk about how “a man is not independent, and cannot afford views that might interfere with his bread and butter” (1400). He is trying to say that if you do not have the same ideas or opinions as you neighbors you could possible damage your social standing and business prosperities. Later on Twain talks about how we all have to approve ourselves by the approval of others, “it is our nature to conform; it is a force which not many can successfully resist” (1402). For example when a new fashion trend comes along like the feather in the hair, one person has it then everyone else start to do it even if they do not like it in order to feel like they fit in. Eventually this trend will go out of style and if you are seen wearing it you will get laughed at because it is not what is in style anymore. Another essay “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut talks about a bleak future where everyone is the same. Vonnegut’s story ties in with Twain’s essay because it is about a future where every one is the same. If a man was tall he was tied down with weights to balance out someone of a lesser size, if someone was gorgeous they would have to wear a hideous mask to cover it up, etc. I agree with Twain’s and Vonnegut’s argument about conformity, people tend to agree with the majority.…

My cheer team, Spirit Celebration, practiced almost every night for the last month and could practically perform our routine in our sleep. This competition is what we prepared for all season. As our team gathers together, we stretch listening to our music over and over reviewing the routine in our minds. As we walk to the practice gym we glance at the other teams and laugh when they mess up. We performed our routine on the warm up mat perfectly. Walking to the on-deck area, we talk among ourselves with not a worry in the world. As we stand on deck we prayed not only to hit a clean routine but to have fun and that no would one get hurt. The emcee announces, “Performing now from Richardson, Texas, Spirit Celebration”, and it’s time to compete. The lights are bright and I can see nothing beyond the blue performance mat but black spots. The music starts and the crowd goes wild blowing air horns, banging wooden blocks together and trying to make as much noise as possible…

In this heightened sense of anticipation, I can feel more, I can smell me, I can hear more, I can even see more. I can feel the weight of my pads. The sweat on the cushions, and how they seem to cool my chest and my back. This wet feeling would usually be uncomfortable, but in this moment being uncomfortable doesn’t matter. I can smell aroma of the burgers and hot dogs being sold just outside the stadium. The smell would usually trigger some kind of hunger in my stomach, but in this moment my stomach doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is my mind and my muscles, and beating Westwood. I can hear the fans on both sides cheering. Some cheer for the undefeated Westwood and some cheer for us, the underdogs. But for some reason those cheers don’t excite me. All the cheering doesn’t matter; I find my excitement in this. My excitement is in the start of this game, my excitement is in us doing what “can’t” be done. My excitement is in beating Westwood. And finally I can see them. I can see the Westwood players. They are big, in fact much bigger than us. What do these guys eat? That doesn’t matter right now. Their size, that too means nothing. What matters is beating…

    Pillsbury

Ivan Gullen, the Marketing manager for Pillsbury’s Refrigerated Baked Goods (RGB) needs to plan a marketing strategy for the upcoming fiscal year. RGB was the fourth largest category in the General Mills Canada portfolio and its performance has been stagnant with flat growth rates over the last few years. Refrigerated Cookies comprise of 62% of RGB’s unit sales and contribute majorly towards profits in this category. Gullen with the help of Lou Pasto, General Mills Consumer Insight Manager, has undertaken the usage and attitude study to understand the target market of refrigerated cookie users in Canada. Both Gullen and Pasto feel that understanding the local consumers will help them plan an effective marketing strategy for Refrigerated Cookies. Furthermore, to get more insight they have also conducted a qualitative research using In Home and Discovery workshop. The attitude & usage study as well as the qualitative research methods have contributed a great deal in understanding the consumers of RGB products. However, the current undertaken research is not enough to plan an effective marketing mix for the next fiscal year, which can promise both better sales and higher market penetration. The qualitative research undertaken by TerraNova market strategies Inc. has helped us understand the emotional appeal and hedonic reasons associated with baking cookies. It unveiled the fact that consumers are looking for easy, quick, practical and affordable products, the research also highlighted that consumers had a healthy image of the Pillsbury brand and the nutritional value was satisfactory. However, planning a marketing strategy based on these results would be unreasonable. The methods used to collect the above data were not the best ones. For example: the in home emersion study provides an understanding of how consumers deal with the product once they have purchased it and does not give sufficient data around what…

From the top of the hill a round of Double Gloucester cheese is rolled, and competitors race down the hill after it. The first person over the finish line at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. In theory, competitors are aiming to catch the cheese, however it has around a one second head start and can reach speeds up to 70 mph (112 km/h), enough to knock over and injure a spectator.…
