Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD)
-as defined in IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) Difficulty to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. “…a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance: 1. Difficulty to build or maintain satisfactory interpersonal relationships with peers and teachers. 2. Inappropriate types of behavior (acting out against self or others) or feelings (express's the need to harm self or others, low self-worth, etc.) under normal circumstances. 3. A general pervasive mood of unhappiness or depression. 4. A tendency to develop physical symptoms or fears associated with personal or school problems.
Categories of EBD
1. Externalizing behaviors constitute an acting-out style that could be described as aggressive, impulsive, coercive, and noncompliant.
2. Internalizing behaviors are typical of an inhibited style that could be described as withdrawn, lonely, depressed, and anxious.
Emotional Disturbances * Hyperactivity (short attention span, impulsiveness); * Aggression or self-injurious behavior (acting out, fighting); * Withdrawal (not interacting socially with others, excessive fear or anxiety); * Immaturity (inappropriate crying, temper tantrums, poor coping skills); and * Learning difficulties (academically performing below grade level).
Characteristics/ Warning Signs * Your child is aggressive towards people and is often found to play wicked tricks on them. * There is a general aggression towards animals, which manifests itself in the form of cruelty. * You have hardly found your child being affected by the pain of others or showing regret for mean actions. * There have complaints of your child destroying property, like defacing school desks, drawing graffiti or indulging in vandalism. * Your child
