debate: children that watch tv effects their education
Good morning year 10 health class, today I am going to discuss the topic of if watching TV should be banned for children. I am against this notion. There are many reasons why I think television shouldn’t be banned for children. My first reason is that watching educational TV programs can help your child develop skills such as reading and spelling; it also provides a wide range of general information. It is proven that children who watch educational TV shows are most likely to do better in school than children who don’t. Statistics show that children who watched television shows such as Sesame Street in the 90’s academically did better in school. Television programs such as play school and again Sesame Street, heavily promote reading books at a younger age. It is also shown that when children watch television shows they want to be like or act like the character they are watching on the screen, they become interested in this character and want to know and learn more about them.

My second reason why I think TV should not be banned for children is that television can be used as a stress release, compared to adults it may seem like children don’t have a lot to be stressed about, but in fact they do have concerns of there own. Stressing out can be just as overwhelming for children as it can be for adults, pertically if they don’t have effective coping strategies. Statics show that 49% of children watch TV or play video games to release stress. This percentage shows that watching television can definitely be used as a tool to release stress for children.

These days just about every household owns a TV. There are many programs for children on the TV and we may think that it is harmless for a child to watch TV because they are “educational” or what not. True, some shows can teach your child some beneficial things such as learning to count or the alphabet, yet if a child is watching too much TV how can this impact the way children interact? And how much do you think is too much TV watching? Well according to the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they say : “The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that kids under 2 years old not watch any TV and that those older than 2 watch no more than 1 to 2 hours a day of quality programming.” We may think, well why this is when the kid is under 2 years of age how can it have an effect on them. Well the website (Kids Health from Neumors) they mention “The first 2 years of life are considered a critical time for brain development. TV and other electronic media can get in the way of exploring, playing, and interacting with parents and others, which encourages learning and healthy physical and social development.” I personally have noticed that kids in this day and age play less outdoors and when I was a child I always wanted to go play outside and use my imagination to create my own adventures. Now I see many parents struggle to get their kids to go outside and play. I notice many kids are addicted to watching TV or even more so be stuck on playing video games. According to (CNN.com) “ when you consider that more time is spent in front of a television means less time spent on homework or having stimulating interactions with adults or other children. In addition, late-night TV watching tires kids out so that they can't pay attention in school. Also, television hands kids all the answers, promoting passive learning and short attention spans. As a result, kids have difficulty concentrating and working hard to solve a problem.”…

Television can be entertaining and educational for kids depending on the context of the programming and also on the age a child starts to watch it. Children are exposed to television before they are exposed to any other form of media. This usually begins before the age of two even though it is not recommended because of the lack of information on how this affects children development. Nowadays we have special TV shows that are directed towards infants and there is also a cable network specifically intended for babies. This, however, does not mean that we should refrain from the normal social interactions that kids should have at that age and put them in front of the “box”. The first 2 years of life are of the most importance when it comes to brain development. This is why it is believed that many types of media, including TV, can get in the way of a children learning process. This includes playing with other, and interacting with the kid’s relatives. These are activities that support learning and healthy physical and social growth. Having said that, it is necessary to note that a little time in front of the TV could be a good thing for kids. Many children that are not yet in school could learn to count and could even learn the alphabet. Older kids could learn about the world, nature and wildlife. In contrast, children that are exposed to violence might turn to be aggressive and be scare of the things that surround them. Parents need to be aware of what kids are seeing on TV and need to encourage kids to spend more time outside playing and exploring so they can learn firsthand what the world is about.…
