Visit the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC) and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Web sites. Summarize the mission of each association. Report back on at least two areas where each organization is currently taking a leadership role and or creating initiatives to promote the profession of Marriage and Family Counseling.

IAMFC is an organization that promotes excellence in the practice of couples and family counseling by creating and disseminating first-class publications and media products, providing a forum for exploration of family-related issues, involving a diverse group of dedicated professionals in our activities, and emphasizing collaborative efforts. It was chartered in 1989 and is a division of the American Counseling Association which embraces a multicultural approach in support of the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of the families we serve. Membership usually includes counselors, mental health counselors, marriage and family counselors and therapists, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. IAMFC is a contemporary, non-political organization that respects cultural differences, diversity, and sister professional associations. IAMFC inspires counselors to think systemically and to advocate for the worth and dignity of all families. IAMFC creates initiatives by offering students and professional members current information in the field of Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy through top quality publications: The Family Journal and The Family Digest.
The AAMFT is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. Ever since 1942, they have been involved with the problems, needs and changing patterns of couples and family relationships. The association facilitates research, theory development and education.
