Ang Pakikibaka Ng Mga Pilipino
Pinoy Times, Lunes, Marso 5, 2001, p. 4
Express your agreement or disagreement to the statement above. Give concrete examples. In what ways have colonial education developed this apathy or lack of interest? In what ways can the present system of education help solve this problem.
To a certain extent, I agree and disagree with the statement, I do not wish to appear NOT to have a stand on this so allow me to explain:
If I were to be realistic, I would have to admit that the statement is true. An example is an ordinary teacher working in a public school who handles three subjects and an advisory class with 30-50 students per class. She has a family of her own with 2-3 children and a husband who is a government employee. She rents a house with a fee of 5 thousand a month, exclusive of utilities. All children are in school. Monthly expenses on food, transportation, school fees etc. exceed her and her husband’s salaries combined. To augment their monthly earnings both husband and wife take on additional jobs, the teacher has private tutorials after school and the husband drives for a family on the weekends and holidays.
No one can question her integrity as a teacher; she does her work well and with sincerity. But with the bulk of her responsibilities not only with her own family but with her students, do you think she has the time to debate on issues such as corruption in government? An issue that she was born in and with already. An issue that she has no immediate solution for. An issue that continues even after the post has “changed hands”. That no matter who sits in government, same problem

The colonial era began in the early 1500s and continued through the mid 1700s. Columbus had just discovered America and more Europeans started migrating over to the colonies. Colonialists believed that their British culture and education would be beneficial for the Native Americans who currently inhabited North America. The colonist’s main goals with education were to maintain the authority of government and religious teachings. As Spring states in The American School, “People were taught to read and write so they could obey the laws of the state and religion” (13). Education was primarily a source of reinstating the importance of obeying laws and knowing who was in charge. They wanted to protect the political and economic power of the elite. Along with this, they also taught obedience to God. Through the teachings of Christianity, children learned about rights, values, and moral code. This was in the hopes of eliminating all crime, immortality, and poverty. It limited people’s freedom of thought. There was no longer a gray area; right and wrong were specifically laid out for people. Education in this era was less about learning to expand your knowledge and increase your status and more about learning your place in society and who was in charge and how to think. It taught the students how to act properly and to obey and listen to whoever was in charge.…

Assimilation involves those who are colonized being forced to conform to the cultures and traditions of the colonizers. Gauri Viswanathan points out that “cultural assimilation is… the most effective form of political action”. Because “cultural domination works by consent and often precedes conquest by force” (85). Colonizing governments realize that they gain strength, not necessarily through physical control, but through mental control. This mental control is implemented through a central intellectual location and the school system. Because colonial education is “directed at absorption into the metropolis and not separate and dependent development of the colonized in their own society and culture” (4). Colonial education strips the colonized people away from their indigenous learning structures and draws them toward the structures of the colonizers. Much of the reasoning that favors such a learning system comes from supremacist ideas of the colonizers. .” The ultimate goal of colonial education is this: “We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and color, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in…

Last July 28, 2014, President Benigno S. Aquino III had his fifth State of the Nation Address. This serves as a means to inform the nation about the present conditions of the country. SONA 2014 highlights the achievements of the administration on education, social services, economy, infrastructure, calamity efforts, jobs, rehabilitations after typhoons and earthquakes, modernization of AFP, security, ARMM Bangsamoro and livelihood. The President used many metaphors in uttering his speech, he started with a common Filipino saying, “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makararating sa paroroonan.” It is just right because this is his second to the last year in service, before he entered, our country was filled with problems left unsolved. Before, we were considered “The Sick Man of Asia” with weak economy and sparse industry. Corruption was also endemic. And maybe when we look back to the past with a lot of problems impossible to solve, we will be motivated to correct mistakes, within the President’s leadership we began to hope and had our journey on a straight and righteous path or the so called “Tuwid na Daan.”…
