A place of important

Place of Importance. There’s always a place of importance that everyone has in their lives. A place where it holds strong feelings or good memories, like of a place where I had grew up. My place of importance would be the Philippines because that’s where I was born and was brought up. I was born in Bangui, Ilocos Norte Philippines, and I came to the United States when I was six years old. Later, I went back for a couple of months when I was about twenty-years old. My place of importance is characterized by the hospitality, the beautiful nature, culture/history, and the journey I had gone through in my hometown. One of the first many things that make the Philippines an important place to me would the great hospitality that they show. The people are so friendly and very generous here because everyone loves to help make sure everything is taken care of. I remember a time back in 2005 when I was in college, the students in my host university, Valenzuela, Fatima University were all very nice and enthusiastic in introducing me to their campus and culture; they even used their spare time to bring me and my friends around Manila. It really meant a lot to me that they took the time to show me around and that they cared. I just had a great feeling that I was going to enjoy going to school in the Philippines. Filipinos also wear lovely smiles on their faces. Even when they are stuck in traffic or in a long queen, they are still happy enjoying music, or chatting with friends, and even seeing people drinking beer in front of their house having a good time. This has stayed with me because it warms my heart how every smiling face can make your day better even when you’re having a rough day. Beauty and Nature is another reason why the Philippines are important to me. As you look up at the clear blue skies you can see the fluffy white clouds forming into different pictures. The bright shining sun that lights up nature and shines

There are copious elements that without a doubt have had a profound impact on myself, specifically being born in California. Numerous factors have a paramount influence on who you are, and for myself, the place I was born adequately peaks the list. Indeed, I can claim that being born in California exposes people to a vast number of cultures. Also, there is a certain slower pace of life. Additionally, the scenery, as well as weather, is extremely beautiful. California’s diverse population, laid back lifestyle, scenery and weather have all played a piece in shaping the person I am…

My life begins here in Brownsville, Texas. However, I was only there from the beginning when I was a newborn before going back to Matamoros, Tamaulipas where my family had their own house. My mom wanted to have me in the U.S. because people had told her that there were far more opportunities over here. Technically, these two cities have become my two homes. I do miss Matamoros, Tamaulipas because that’s where I spend most of my childhood until I was seven years old. Then we had to return back to Texas because one of my younger sisters got very sick. The first five years outside of Matamoros were miserable for me because I didn’t speak an ounce of English which left me feeling so different from everyone else.…

Where we live makes a big impact on our sense of self and our attitude about how “normal” people live. Traveling to different areas of the country exposes us to samples of cultural differences within just the United States. In New York, affluence is measured in fashion and dollars. In Boston it is about history, who you know and education. In Hawaii, the focus is on hospitality, "Mahalo", being laid back, and the waves. In the Mid-West, for some it is about the family farms and agriculture. The area and culture of the city we live in may be a shock to newcomers, and a given to those of us who have never lived elsewhere. It's our identity; it’s who we are and what we do.…

In addition, another great tradition is the blessing of almost anything relating to the living and operating in the Philippines. There is never a lack of choices in the Philippines, and each food has tradition by the way it is prepared and cooked. They have western and local restaurants; they offer anything and everything you can imagine from pastries to gourmet dishes. The malls are even set up to the respect of the culture as many stores that cater to the older generation. The Philippines offer something for everyone and with dollar, having a good currency conversion; many ex-patriots retire there and live well without the worry and concern of expenses like they would have in the United States. They are even being enacted to draw in their experience and talents to help the local businesses expand, grow with some western marketing and advertising…

Life should be spent with in an atmosphere of love and compassion. The Filipino culture is built on a strong family foundations. Filipinos don’t believe in putting their elderly into a senior center or care home. Seniors wish to spend the rest of their days around the family. Both of my grandparents on my mother’s side are staying with us. If they need medical care daily, the family will hire a home help nurse to care for the patient in the comfort of their own home. Keeping the family together is a part of our culture. While my grandmother goes grocery shopping or is driving her grandchildren to school, my grandfather is cooking or relaxing on his rocking chair watching shows themed on the super natural. Filipinos also have a close bond and sense of unity with our family as a whole. To stay connected, my family and I go on outings every weekend. The religious beliefs are also strong among the Filipino persons. As far as I know there are only a handful in my family that are under a different or do not believe in any religion. Most of the Philippine island’s people are Catholic. Prayer and going to Sunday mass is not something to be missed. If my family is unable to attend on a Sunday, we attend on Saturday afternoon’s mass. Assured…

    The Filipino People

How best to describe some of the warmest, friendly and informal people in the world? As with most predominantly Roman Catholic cultures religious traditions and customs help define the daily lives of the people, family values and their view of the world. Since arriving in the Philippines in 1980 I have felt more comfortable and at "home" than any of the more than 20 countries I have visited. My warm feeling is a direct result of the happy go lucky, easy going Filipino people all over the islands. Though over 70 language dialects, three major island regions and many of the 77 provinces lacking infrastructure help to divide Filipinos in many ways one thing they share is their love of life shown by their smiles and sense of humor. Three million Filipinos have emmigrated or work a large part of their lives outside the country but their great talent with learning and speaking different languages help make them disappear and be absorbed into every country they have gone. The many overseas Chinese worldwide also the Koreans and Japanese in North America are easiliy recognized living together in areas referred to as Chinatown, Koreatown or Japantown and introducing their cuisine wherever they go. Since the Philippines is such a "melting pot," Filipinos often are identified as Asians and/or Pacific Islanders; however, it truly depends on who you are asking. Living in the Philippines through the years I have experienced many emotions regarding the Filipino people, concerning both their strengths and their weaknesses. It took moving back to my own country before my view of Filipinos seasoned and matured with age and distance. I love and appreciate the Filipino people more than my own and will always consider it "home".…

I love how foreigners deliberately visit our country year after year just to experience the coziness they can get from every corner of the Philippines, from antique houses and historical landmarks to water sports camps and white sand beaches. Filipinos, we can compete globally, internationally, and universally. We have great engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and other professionals. But where are those Filipino people right now? Are there hearts and minds are in the Philippines? I hope so. They were born and raised and study here in the Philippines but they use this country to be their practice ground only and after their graduation they will migrate and work in the country they want to. After that they will come back here and almost dying without saying “thank you’ or any contribution. The most pungent question they will ask is “what kind of government does the Philippines have?’. It’s just the same with what kind of people does the Philippines have.…
