He ran down two flights of stairs and once he made it outside the train, he waited behind a lady standing in the middle of the train's automatic sliding doors. Leonardo jumped from his seat and quickly got off to exit the train when a man dressed in a black suit, wearing black sunglasses stopped Leonardo in his tracks, putting his left hand with a black glove on out to stop Leonardo from walking out. The man towered over him, Leonardo looked up at the big, bulky man and asked, "can I help you?" The man stared down at Leonardo, the turned his head to the backpack hanging off Leonardo's left shoulder. Leonardo realized what the man was staring at, then took off. Leonardo started running for his life, which he was, the man chased him until Leonardo hid behind a large trash can causing the man to lose sight of Leonardo. The man grunted angrily and ran in the opposite direction of Leonardo, he then let a shaky breath out and slowed down his heavy breathing by taking deep breaths. Still hiding, and out of breath, put the backpack on securely and put his head

It helped me remember that all of these horrendous things had truly taken place, and real people were actually forced into this cramped train car. It was like a punch in the gut; someone had stood in that exact spot as they were being led to their death, this footprint one of their last marks on Earth.…

He closed his eyes. Now a dreamy music was accompanying the film and train whistles were sounding in the distance, and he was a boy again walking along a railroad trestle down South, and seeing the train coming, and running back as fast as he could go, and hearing the whistleblowing, and getting off the trestle to solid ground just in time, with the earth trembling beneath his feet, and feeling relieved as he ran down the cinder-strewn embankment onto the highways and looking back and seeing with terror that the train had left the track and was following him right down the middle of the street, and all the while people laughing as he ran screaming. . . (Ellison 125) His mind is playing tricks on him and taking him away from reality. This scene examines the fate of the protagonist.…
