The Missouri Compromise was created in 1820 to put an end to the conflict between the slave and non-slave states, however, it only caused the conflict to worsen. The dispute began to get worse and worse, eventually making the sectionalism between the North and South increase. The Missouri Compromise ignited sectionalism within the United States, which further contributed to a terrible War.…

While there had already been tension building between the North and the South, the addition of new territory added new fuel to the fire. If the new states that emerged from the Louisiana Territory were all free, then the balance of power in the U.S. Senate would tilt decisively against slavery or vice versa . From the moment that the expansion of the United States emerged, there was conflict. Eventually after many years of debate the Missouri Compromise came to be in 1820. The Missouri Compromise was devised by Henry Clay . It was an attempt to defuse the tension causes by the addition of the Louisiana Purchase. It gave the pre-slavers the decisive state they needed to hold their position in congress. After much debate was had about which states would be free or slave states with the addition of the Louisiana Purchase, a compromise was worked out. To appease both sides Missouri would be admitted as a slave state and Maine (which used to be apart Massachusetts) would have the status of a free state, and minus Missouri, slavery was to be excluded at a certain latitude . With the Missouri Compromise; all states south of Missouri would be slave states and all states north of it would be free. The addition of Missouri as a slave state just ignited the already hot debate about the legitimacy of slavery. While the Louisiana Purchase would eventually help to…
In my opinion, Texas decided to leave the American Union because its fear of isolation from majority of the union, particularly the north. Also, escalation of fear and paranoia already took Texas by storm due to talk of the abolition of slavery. Lincoln won the presidential election of 1861 and the Republicans took control of the executive branch. With the Republicans now “strong enough in numbers”, Texas feared their rights would be taken for granted and the union would only fulfill the northern states wishes. Texas doubt was not without reason as Lincoln argued that all territories should be free and not allow slavery.…
The Texas Declaration of Secession discusses the different reasons why Texas decided to succeed from the Union and side with the Confederacy. Texas cited the main reasons to be the promotion of welfare, insurance of domestic tranquility and security of blessings of peace and liberty of their residents. Texas believed that with joining the Confederacy their best interests would be protected which included protection from their boarding country, Mexico.…
Texas as well fought in this long battle and was part of the south. But, why did Texas fight in the civil war? Similar to the Missouri Compromise in 1820, the biggest fear was that slave-owning southerners would hold control in congress, having a drastically larger share of votes in the senate as well as the house. Although “abolitionists were one of the most outspoken groups in the United States, and they vehemently denounced the war” (Newman, 1) Whigs and pacifists were involved in the campaign against the war. Whig senator William Cabell Rives described what many other believed of the war, emphasizing that the US did not have the right to “interfere with the institutions of other countries' and maintained that other people in other countries should be free to pursue their own happiness and destiny, just as we are able to enjoy these pursuits without interference.” Whigs and pacifists strongly believed that to “extend the limits of empire by violence and conquest is a low and discredited ambition; but to extend the moral empire is an ambition worthy of the age and worthy of America.” Clearly the fact that the U.S. first acted and invaded Mexico’s land was essential in the opposing side’s…
Why fight in a battle that you have no reason to fight in? Sometimes, you have your own causes that other people might not see. After Abraham Lincoln was elected as president in 1860, the southerners were not happy, and were afraid of losing their right to own slaves. They began to rebel and that was how the Civil War began. Texas was in the U.S., but this might not have been there fight, so why did Texans fight in the war? I believe they fought in the Civil War, because of states rights, Texas love and pride, and to preserve slavery.…
