Karol Wojtyla had a hard childhood but did not blame God, but dedicated his life to him. He hid from the Nazis, took care of his family, and served God all at one time. His mother died when he was 9, and his older brother Edmund died when he was 12. Karol went to mass every day in Poland during World War II and took refuge with Poland's Archbishop at the time. Many priests have been priests for over 30 years, but Wojtyla was elected pope 31 years after his ordination, in 1978. He changed his name to Pope John Paul II. He established World Youth Day, an annual day helping the Youth. He visited 128 different countries, fighting discrimination and mistreatment throughout the world. He died on April 2, 2005. Just a couple months before his death, he had surgery and lost his voice, literally. He died mute, and couldn't talk the last couple of months of his life.
