Essay Assignment: What I Do Best

Everyone has at least one specialty. Someone is good at music, the other is good at sport. Everyone has the different specialty. Among this group of people, some of them will merge their specialty into their life like musicians, artists, engineers, interior designers, etc. For me, I think I'm good at painting. When I was 6 years old, my mom was always paint with me. Painting can led me relax, and expressing my mood on paper. After I finished my works, my teachers, friends said, " Your painting is so amazing! " so I love painting and that's my specialty.

My parent's viewpoint is very free; they let us choose our majors and what we want to learn. For me, painting is my major. When I was a child, my mom was always painting with me, I really love this time, because my mom will never say, You must draw a flowers, a dog, etc. Sometimes I will ask her about my painting, "What should I do next? " and she replied, "If I tell you the next step, that will be my painting, you have to create your own world on your papers." This sentence affected me very deeply.

Henry Ward Beecher said, “Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.” That's exactly truth. Artists paintings always express their mood in their works; I also express my feeling into my painting. For me painting is the easiest way to relax. I can use a lot of colors to explain anger, happiness, sadness, surprise, or anything in my life. The other reason I love painting is I don't need to limit myself. I can freely sway pigment on paper. I don't need to care about others opinion or their scolding. That's the secret space for me.

How do I know I'm good at painting? Actually, I'm not sure whether my painting skill is perfect or not, but I promise I use my whole energy when I paint. Sometimes I will use all day to draw a small painting. My friend always said, "No pain no gain." so my all-day painting's work is always better than the other works. When I share my painting with my mom and my friends, they always said, "You really did a great job,” so amazing"...etc. Therefore I think I'm good at painting.

In conclusion, Vincent van Gogh said, "Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul." Art is freedom; I can express my mood on the painting. My mom said, " You have to create your own world on your papers." So now painting is my life; the brush is my soul; I create my world on paper. Like Pablo Picasso said, "Painting is just another way of keeping a diary" I’m good at expressing my mood on painting, I record my life by painting.

“Not like that!” My sister Hana used to yell at me every time I paused the video tape of a cartoon show. I would stand over the TV screen with my paper on the screen and pencil in my hand, copying my favorite characters. “I told you to draw, not to copy” she would add. “I want it to be perfect!” was my reply. At a very young age, I developed a passion for drawing. My sister used to challenge me to draw some of our favorite cartoon characters. From these humble beginnings I started to develop into a skilled painter. When my father recognized my talent, he bought me several drawing books. Although I have always enjoyed creating different types of art, portraits (drawing a person’s facial features), captured my interest the most. Portraits require…

There is also a lot of suffering, crashes of motivation and it is exactly during these periods of time that I draw upon my artistic side. Through art I travel to a different dimension. I pass from a place where time is everything; swimming paces, cycling speeds, running times etc. and on to a place where time is meaningless; it either passes slowly or rapid, and it is diffenct. Sometimes after dinner I decide to sketch, and soon it turns into a painting, and eventually my mother enters to my art studio, suddenly I realize it is 3;00 a.m. and I am still painting. That is the power of art it allows you to wander. It awakens my creative side and challenges me to put in the canvas all those weird, surrealist scenes that cross my mind at night. And due to these random imaginative sparks I’ve always carry a notepad with me sketching objects, writing phrases or anything that inspires me daily which helps me expand my imagination. The canvas has become a diary for me. This passion for art has always kept my mind open to new…

In the article, When Children Draw, the author Sandra Crosser PhD. talks about how children start drawing at an early age. Children start scribbling around the age of 18 months, not intending to illustrate an object at first, but rather, to entertain themselves. Even at this early age, toddlers use drawing as a form of expression. As the article states, “children use drawing to express their emotions”. The same is for artists, in some cases by just looking at their work we have an idea of what they were feeling at the time their work was completed. A good example is Frida Kahlo (not in chapter 6), she painted a lot of self-portraits and in many we can see the pain she was feeling. We should continue to encourage our kids to keep drawing…

The rough, yet smooth texture of a canvas knocks down all boundaries and only leaves room for creativity. The line from the tip of my pencil is not just nonsense; every drawing is representation of me and everything that I feel at a given moment. Through art, I have learned how this life isn't always pretty blue skies, and ceramic vases. It is purple skies with an orange hue, tornadoes in perfect weather, grimaces and tears, and so much more that words cannot convey, which is why I draw. Through art, I have learned that with the frustration and failures, there is reward in forms of pride and satisfaction of taking a step back and admiring my own…

“Mom! Can you draw for me”, a common phrase that echoed from our small Brooklyn apartment, see when I saw my mom, I saw a hero, my protector, and one of my biggest influences. She would always entertain and illustrate my wildest imaginations, from Dinosaurs to dragons to James Bond, the mind of that Pre-Schooler seemed to never rest. But one day my mom did something new, she gave me the paper and pencil, and I would sketch, sketch and sketch until the days came to end. And by the time kindergarten came around I was already enthused with art, oozing a new love of painting, a love that still reigns supreme today. I find painting to be my favorite medium. Something I truly wish to master. From the time I was a young child to where I am now I see…

But it’s also a great part of who I am and what I am as a person. The existence of it serves as the drive behind my motivation in my creative process. A constant reminder of my capabilities is the overused paintbrush that I hold in my calloused hand. Layers of old and new paint left after on the handle is the sign of an unrelenting artist at work; building upon layer and layer in skills with experiences without really ever reaching a stopping point. That’s because there is no true stopping point as there is no such thing as the best artist. Art is as subjective as my identity is to others, there is no right or wrong concept and it’s the reason why I love art. Art cannot be right nor wrong, since there isn't a set idea to govern it. You must possess a passion for studiously getting better, more creative, and exceed expectations. Natural talent may start you off at a higher level but those who practice passionately will surpass those with natural talent. An aspiring creator like me often wants to break boundaries and go beyond the limit, putting in more work than needed or expected. My hard work is equivalent to the recognition that my project receives. A paintbrush loaded with lots of experiences represents my work ethic and creativity that embodies a large part of my cultural…
