The first main sociological question in the "Fraternities and Rape on Campus" study performed by Patricia Yancey Martin and Robert A. Hummer was, "What characteristics do fraternities have that make them prone to objectification of women and more likely to commit gang rape on college campuses and why fraternities encourage the sexual coercion of women.…

Being a woman of character is an important aspect of the Tri Sigma Mission and to me. To be a woman of character, I believe, is based upon an individuals morals, traits, and behavior. This is important because as a large diverse group of women, we all strive for similar goals. Being in Tri Sigma has further educated me about the "Six Pillars of Character", which include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Tri Sigma members stand for these values because it depicts how universities, communities, and the nation view the sorority and Greek life. The importance of character is is always being thought of, and is what shapes Tri…
The question among some the panel members were whether being a college athletic builds character or if it attracts character. One panelist also believes giving a college athletic a full scholarship is great, but the demand placed on them at the expense of getting an education is distressing. It almost seems as though the athletics are given these scholarships unethically because the universities are using this as their personal gain rather than for the benefit of the athletic.…

Southern Methodist University’s mission statement resonates with the same values I admire about a University such as “promoting an environment emphasizing individual dignity and worth”. Growing up I lacked essential self-worth. Upon beginning highs school I was very confused and frustrated person. I was learning to accept myself for being gay and the conservative and traditional environment I was in made it difficult for me to express who I was. The misrepresentation and disrespect I gained from being a double minority in high school fueled a passion in me which became the catalyst for positive change in my academic career. Since I began to attend Tarrant County College, I have joined the Cornerstone honors program offered at the campus and…
Aleck states, “A Real Man is his ability to construct a porch”. Eror inserts information such as polls that determines what percentage of men are considered “Real Man”. Aleck continues, with presenting how the government and political leaders such as our President has a part with this crisis. He makes it known that as soon as the President came to office and the shift of leadership changed is what caused a rise in the lack of masculinity. Eror shows the importance of how the feeling of less of a man has affected men in fraternities. It has effected men to experiencing forms of anxiety that they feel the need to form groups such as “The Good Men Project”. According to Eror, if one is of higher class and have money one is freer to cultivate a new manly hood of what makes a man. In a personal view he gives his opinions on stances throughout this new generation, such as “body positivity” and just tells of where he stands politically wise which is form of conservative. He asserts on how the men in millennial generation lack in ways that the fathers before them do not lack. He states once the people acknowledge that there is a problem that measures can be taken to continue with decades of social progress. Eror concludes that allowing others to influence the advances of social progress will do no justice to further…
The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.…
My desire to be an Alpha man strongly revolves around the fraternity’s aims, mission statement, and vision. These principles and values of Alpha are something that resonates deeply with how I try to develop myself as a man within an academic setting as well the local community. The fraternity itself set the standard for which other Black Greek fraternities and sororities would follow as being the first inter-collegiate fraternal organization established for African-Americans with the sole purpose of mutual uplift and support. There has never been a time when Alpha Phi Alpha fell short of producing men whose leadership and service to the community made an impact on the lives of African-Americans especially the youth. This is why Alpha Phi Alpha stood out to me in a…

As is the case with most things in life, we all have different perceptions of different things. Given that fact, some perceptions may intertwine and reflect similar opinions and or facts. People will all have different perceptions about politics, religion, education, and sports, just to name a few. However, all of those things could have similar perceptions and similar opinions from different people. However, each could have some common denominator as well. The same could be said for ethics and it’s definition. We may all have different definitions, but it is highly likely we all would mention something that reflected a common denominator or indicated similar perceptions or opinions.…
Despite widespreadknowledge that fraternitymembersare frequently involved in the sexual assaults of women, fraternities are rarely studied as social contexts-groups and organizations-that encourage the sexual coercionof women. An analysis of the normsand dynamicsof the social construction of fraternity brotherhoodreveals the highly masculinistfeatures of fraternitystructureand process, includingconcern with a narrow, stereotypicalconceptionof masculinity and heterosexuality;a preoccupation with loyalty, protection of the group, and secrecy; the use of alcohol as a weapon against women 'ssexual reluctance;the pervasiveness of violence and physicalforce; and an obsession withcompetition, superiority, and dominance. Interfraternityrivalry and competition-particularly over members, intramuralsports, and women-encourage fraternitymen 'scommodification women.Weconclude thatfraternities of will continue to violate…
Kappa Alpha Nu changed its name on April 15 1915 to Kappa Alpha Psi. The first Black Greek-lettered organization Sigma Pi Phi began under Henry M. Minton. Minton had been considered for membership into many fraternities, but had not been successful in being approved. Like Prince Hall, Minton had been rejected by fraternal organizations; he decided to create organization that would provide the benefits of a fraternity for black men. In a meeting with Dr. E.C. Howard, Dr. A.B. Jackson, Dr. R.J. Warwick, Dr. E.T. Hinson and Dr. Robert J. Abele, they decided to form the Sigma Pi Phi (aka Boule).…
To be inducted into the National Honor Society is not a right, but a privilege. There are four important components that one must excel in in order to be inducted – scholarship, leadership, community service, and character. As I speak to you now about scholarship, I realize that I must first define what scholarship actually is.…
Camille Paglia once asked aloud “Heaven help the American-born boy with a talent for ballet.” It is not right to ridicule or target a child for liking something that goes against masculinity or femininity just because they belong to a certain gender. What actually defines a gender? Simple biology has taught us to differentiate men and women by females being able to bare offspring and our common sense merely perceives the physical anatomy. Believing that the world consists of only two genders has been a cultural invention that which does not accommodate the vast amount of experiences humans are capable of living. Even methods of parenting can play a major role towards forming their children’s sexual identity. However, although people are born either male or female, they are made and shaped into men and women.…
